#wlam2018 Day 19: Greenacre Park - Designed by Hideo Sasaki and opened in 1971 — was conceived and developed by Greenacre Foundation, which privately owns and maintains the popular site. The site is another great example of the “Vest pocket park” providing users a peaceful escape from city life. The small park feels larger because of the series of terraced “rooms”, moveable furniture and a dramatic stepped water feature that traverses along the side of the site to the rear framed by lush plantings. The plaza has been threatened by development plans for taller buildings that would ultimately shade the site completely - thankfully earlier proposals were quashed but with increasing population and real estate values, hopefully strong voices will continue to prevail, preserving the lovely character of this treasured park. https://greenacrepark.org/ https://tclf.org/landscapes/greenacre-park #landscape #park #nyc #exploreyourcity #whatsnearby (at Greenacre Park)

#wlam2018 Day 17: Wave Hill - this 28-acre public garden and cultural center in the Bronx overlooks the Hudson River and Palisades. Wave Hill House was built as a country home in 1843 by jurist William Lewis Morris. From 1903-1960 the estate was owned by George W. Perkins, a partner of J.P. Morgan who devoted a great deal of time planning the grounds so as to enhance the property's magnificent vistas. The land was graded and contoured, rare trees and shrubs were planted on the broad lawns, and gardens were created to blend harmoniously with the natural beauty of the Hudson River highlands. #plantoftheday Narcissus - daffodils are finally in bloom on my balcony and all over the city can be seen in parks and in tree pits (likely thanks to @ny4p awesome Daffodil Program!). Here’s some fun facts about #spring’s little darlings: 1. In Greek mythology, Narcissus was a beautiful hunter who fell in love with his own reflection in a pond and never left the pond so the gods turned him into a flower. He was the son of the river god Cephissus and the nymph Liriope (another popular plant name) 2. All parts of the daffodil are poisonous- they contain a toxic chemical called lycorine with the bulb containing the highest levels. 3. #wlam2018 Day 15: St. Nicholas Park - located in Harlem just below City College, this park is named for St. Nicholas of Myra, known as the patron saint of children, sailors, bankers, pawnbrokers, travelers, and captives--as well as the inspiration for Father Christmas or Santa Claus. The park was designed by Landscape architect and Parks Commissioner Samuel Parsons Jr. - he both designed and implemented the park for the city, utilizing his skills for designing with the steep rocky slopes and irregular topography of northern Manhattan. The steep slopes are adorned with some century-old cherry trees, thankfully still in flower after torrential downpours and major flooding this morning. #wlam2018 Day 15: Conservatory Garden - One of my favorite spots for seasonal floral display, Central Park’s only formal garden was constructed in 1937 based on a design by Gilmore Clarke with the planting designed by M. Betty Sprout and site design by Thomas Price The garden is divided into three distinct sections. In the center is an Italianate garden featuring a large central parterre and fountain framed by a wisteria-covered pergola and flanked by two crab apple allées. The north garden is in the French style, defined by small parterres with knotted designs surrounding the fountain Three Dancing Maidens by Walter Schott. The south garden is inspired by English perennial gardens and includes large planting beds with an array of small trees, shrubs, bulbs, and perennials, mixed with annual plantings. In the center is a small water lily pond featuring the Burnett Fountain by Bessie Potter Vonnoh, celebrating the author Frances Hodgson Burnett and her story The Secret Garden.
