Case Study: Deep Water Horizon
According to the lecture delivered through the perspective of a petroluem engineer, we see what happened, why it happened and the further precautions that need to take place to prevent such an incident from happening again. Questionable aspects that might have contributed to the explosion were the casing design, cement design, negative pressure tests that arose confusion, ignition that caused power loss and the inability to seal the well. Although they had other ways activating the BOP with an emergency disconnect (lost in fire), automatic function (didn't work) and ROV operation (didn't work), it had all failed. Resultingly, I see although many safety measures were implemented, the entire system failed with the lack of proper management. From the point of construction to its use for extracting oil, we see how many aspects are overlooked and not tested.
Module 1 Reflection
So far I've really enjoyed what this course has to offer. Security being viewed in a defender or an attackers point of view, the many ways someone could easily break into a house and how most often our sense of security is falsified as there are numerous ways people can cheat the system and/or commit crimes while getting away with it. Other things I've learnt was that a less complex security system is better as it is easier to manage and to focus on out of spec things to view the many complications involved. I look forward to improving my analysis skills throughout the course as well as gaining security engineering skills.
Security Everywhere!
So I'll just mention a security feature I saw today on my day out shopping. Theres security cameras everywhere, buses, trains, shopping centres. Even human security. For buses and trains, it is most likely to keep people monitered from doing bad behaviours. For shoppping centres its to identify people from stealing and such. Security is seen as a reliable defence mechanism that protects people and valuable assets, reducing any crimes from being partaken.
Life Expectancy of a Computer Connected to the Internet
According to this site, life expectancy of a computer averages around 5 years before it needs to be replaced. So the life expectancy of one connected to the internet should last around that range, unless someones been doing the dodgy and gets their pc infected with viruses, rendering it unusable.

わたしわ デタチュ (wk.01)
Hi there. My name is dtch (pron. detach). I make edits of pixel cars and I’m currently learning Japanese. I’m one week into learning and I’ve mastered Hiragana (ひらがな) and Katakana (カタカナ). They are two of the three ‘alphabets’ that are used in Japan. The third is ‘Kanji’. I’m currently learning Kanji through WaniKani. It’s very simple to use and an invaluable resource.
If you’d like to learn to read, write, and speak Japanese, I’d suggest starting at Tofugu’s ultimate guide to Hiragana. I took my time and it took me about 2 days with Hiragana to be confident with reading and recognizing. I’m even able to recall most of the Hiragana.
I hope to make weekly updates with my progress on this blog, under the tag #dtchjp. I plan to do my WK work daily and I hope to reach level 60 within 400 days, or just over one year. Today is day 1.
