Insane Vocab (wk.01½)
Sorry for the small rant, but I can now see why Japanese is the hardest language to learn.
I am on my third day of WaniKani, learning Radicals and Kanji. Today I started learning vocabulary. It’s absolutely insane. The Kanji for ‘one’ is 一 (ichi) but ‘one thing’ is written as 一つ (hitotsu). The Kanji for ‘person’ is 人 (jin) but ‘two people’ is written as 二人 (futari).
Instead of 一つ (hitotsu), I would have thought it was いちつ (ichitsu). Many Kanji have multiple ‘readings’, or, multiple ways to pronounce the same characters that change depending on context and other Kanji in the same sentence (and that also change depending on if the aforementioned Kanji is proceeded or preceded by the first.)
Rant time over. Back to WK.
さよなら。
ETA: Enjoy the small victories. I just reached Lv 2 on WK after 3 days, 22 hours. I’m nearly 4 days ahead of schedule.
