As someone who is nb I'd freaking love Gou to be so, but the character often use "ore" to refer themselves wich is a most commonly used by boys. (Although this doesn't cement anything) Japan still has its own hesitance with lgbt acceptance and while anime tends to be more casual due to the medium allowing such liberties they normally dont have the best representation. I have very little faith the writers would make an lgbt protagonist I can't hope nor trust like that, i dont want to be baited.
I also thought that Gou was nb, but not so long ago @cloudcrest helped me with the confirmation that he is, in fact, a boy. Apparently the missunderstanding was because of a bad translation of an interview, and I reblogged that post with the info, but maybe it'd have been better if i have changed it directly.
I totally agree with what you say, and I don't think they're gonna go for a romantic relationship between Ash and Gou, but the anime by itself is good and it's still fun to ship them, so I don't think they're trying to bait anyone.
