The College was always closed on Wednesdays, so a tradition was started in the 80s to have an irreverent holiday themed parade on w52nd the day before the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade. It was meant as a diversion for students too busy or broke to head home for Thanksgiving & was modeled after the Pasadena Doo Dah Parade. . . The parade had small floats & sometimes inflated helium balloons that often looked like X-rated Jeff Koons art. A recurring bit was the UES Nanny & Dogwalker Precision Marching Squad “doing routines & bringing POC and the underemployed to the Upper East Side since 2009.” The nannies always had triplet strollers and there was a minimum of 5 dogs per walker. . . The College’s “marching band” was never officially recognized as such. They never wore uniforms (the closest was when they dressed up like the guitar guy from Mad Max Fury Road) & sounded more like subway buskers than drum and bugle or show bands. They always closed out the parade. . . Over the years, the parade evolved to be irreverent but veered away from pejorative depictions. One group tried to satirize the Dutch roots of the College w/a tongue-in-cheek depiction of Sinterklaas & Zwarte Piet. That was denied despite the valid cultural criticism. One feature that was cancelled was a set of floats depicting all of the 5 boroughs. The straw that broke the camel’s back was the Staten Island float w/a student reprising Olivia Luccardi’s ranty depiction of a SI girl on HBO’s Girls, along with the Brooklyn float featuring the Real Housewives off Park Slope featuring mother-daughter Instagrammers (Minstagrammers) doing all sorts of inappropriate activities while throwing bags of kale chips at the crowd.” . This flashback ep chronicles the hapless NCAA Div III 🏈 team, where students played for fun. No scholarships, crappy coaches, & a makeshift “field” on the old Pier 40. . . Michael was an alum (class of ’84) who came back to teach in the Architecture Dept & his claim to fame was stadium design. He worked for a firm in NYC, but was often at the Dubai & Singapore offices. He was part of the baseball stadium renaissance that occurred after Camden Yards opened in 1992 & his firm tried in vain to get a downtown Philly park built on the Delaware at Spring Garden. . . He just finished a glossy book on stadiums & was doing book talks in small bookstores like @spoonbillbooks in #williamsburg . After one of these, he recounted playing football at the College at a dilapidated “field” during a bizarre season when the team started winless at 0-2-3. . . “I was on one of the last teams fielded. I was one of the few players who could kick, so I became a starter. Since we didn’t have a real field, there were only 4 home games. Homecoming was after a month of road games & was dubbed roamcoming. Our last home game was in October when we were still winless at 0-2-3, but now we were contending for the conference title. Football was a curiosity at the College & we just had fun w/a lot of convoluted trick plays. The game was played on a miserably cold & rainy afternoon vs St. Christopher. I was en route to being the goat, def not GOAT, after missing 3 field goals. Time was running out & I had an easy 25 yard att. Players were sliding on the cheap Astroturf full of seams and bumps. I slipped at little, but got it through the uprights…barely. We won 9-8 & were the conf champs w/ a 5-2-3 after beating arch rival #HudsonCollege. No playoffs/parades for us. Just Thanksgiving & finals. We all just went our separate ways after that.” . . In IT/IS circles, web anonymity is neither good not bad, as that lies in in the user & usage of technologies. I’ve also been thinking about gender, discourse, & contagion. This has a bit of @blackmirror.netflix in it. . . . The College had an internal communication system based on a Slack-like Intranet (web & mobile), intending on closing off a lot of external email communications. This allowed for email, texting, video conferencing, a “structured talk” microblog, etc., but it allowed for the creation of up to 5 aliases. The idea was to allow students who felt marginalized or unheard to create identities to have voice without fear of reprisal. The TOS warned everyone that while the system allowed the creation of anonymous accounts, the should be no expectation of total privacy & anonymity. Nobody read the TOS. . . The Intranet was called Evenfall, an archaic term for twilight or dusk. It was used in typical ways that students communicate: sharing memes, downloaded Tic Tocs, music, test answers, mildly racy content, etc. Things were more or less fine until a few students started to blow up as influencers, but with controversial IG personas. The haters & the sycophants squared off, but everyone had an opinion. Things started to spiral out of control. The IT director was fit to be tied. She sent out an email over the weekend copying the TOS & stating (threatening) anyone found in violation will have all their posted content switched to their real names. “No aliases for you.” A flurry of panicked messages flooded the help desk account w/pleas of mercy from students, along with thin excuses for behaving badly. The President & IT Director had a facepalm moment 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♂️ when a report generated found a great deal of bullying content was from a select few faculty & staff. The following Monday was awkward with a lot of avoiding eye contact. . . The Arcuri brothers were bankrupt after their small boutique Irestaurant on the Jersey Shore failed. They were from Calabria, coming to NJ in 2000 after being perplexed, repulsed, & fascinated with the early Sopranos. One brother was a culinary genius, while the other handled the business side…and was very protective of his brother. The President of the College loved their restaurant & was frustrated with the contract with #Sodexo. So, the President decided to give the Arcuris the foodservice contract, which was a bit of a leap of faith. . Recent reports came out that student meals at @wellesleycollege averaged out to $12 with a mandatory dining plan. While upscale and full of choices, the President thought the Arcuris could do better. . The College had several cafés, a pub, and an automat throughout its various buildings. The offerings were mediocre & the students were clamoring for Starbucks that would take their meal plans & a revamping of the dining hall that served up vats of institutional food. Landing the contract was easy compared to executing on a scale they weren’t prepared for. They felt over their heads. The brothers started to bicker… . “Look. I’m not going to argue about this. We need to come up with menus under budget, perfect them, & be ready by September.” . “What the f*ck is this? What is this vee-gan? What is this gluten free? These kids. I’ll tell you what they need with their fast foodstuffs & bad complexions. They need the glutton free diet.” . I’m envisioning replicas of these furnishings adapted for a college/university setting for the @winterwick.college sets. Pervasive through the college interiors & architecture is a quirky aesthetic informed by both mid- & (gasp) ¾-century design. . . I can’t help but think of sets & locations as I’m conceptualizing scripts & scenes. Setting is always a character, likely stemming from my love of #filmnoir & #frenchnewwave. Several office meeting scenes I’ve written are in spaces that are intentionally claustrophobic with cramped rooms & low ceilings. The metaphor is a crowded boat that a bunch of bickering people are stuck on. This is based on someone I barely know, but haven’t seen in about a decade…a tragic codependent figure who gives up all agency in order to not be alone. The narcissism stems from perceived failures & inadequacies. It would be interesting for #ScottMechlowicz to play Don & Matt Damon to reprise cuckolding his character (Eurotrip). . Don (Dundonald) was a cog in the College’s finance dept, perfectly content doing mundane analyses. There were limited opps & the more ambitious would move on after getting experience. While Don wasn’t stupid, his nickname was Dunce to the younger staff. . There was nothing memorable about Don. One would be hard pressed to recall anything about him, other than a dad joke or the occasional off-color remark. . . Don’s first marriage disintegrated abruptly. His second wife was the result of a rebound relationship borne out of desperation...known chiefly for her inappropriate attire & baking strange gluten free olive oil cakes. Don’s choices made it clear he sought out a specific personality type: domineering w/a bit of a mean streak, resembling his paternal grandmother. He no longer had friends from his past & he rarely interacted w/his kids, siblings, or parents. His social life was on lockdown. . As cracks in Don’s 2nd marriage appeared, he would get belittled about how his first wife cuckolded him by banging his buddies on his basketball team in Yorktown, as well as having an affair w/a respected figure in their church. Not one of his friends bothered to tell him. It’s easy to shrug off the plight of the living embodiment of a styrofoam rice cake. . “Listen, Donny. You’ll tow the line like you always do. W/out me, you’d go back to being the sniveling little boy I found, heartbroken & jerking off to some sunburned slag who you thought loved you.” . . Maybe it was because she was so much like her mom that it seemed as if any of her father’s genetic material never had a shot, as if it were scared away. . Her stepdad (Michael) died suddenly on a hike near Breckenridge. It was a freak accident, where a friend lost their footing and sent him down a steep ravine where he hit his head. Michael treated Taylor like his own daughter & she never gave her biological dad any thought…until Michael died. . What started as a curiosity turned into a bit of an obsession. Her mom knew nothing of what happened to her dad. It didn’t take much sleuthing to find him given genealogical & genomic databases. He was living in the West Village in a dingy apartment in a building that was part of an inheritance. . Taylor, a photography MFA, took to spying on her dad & taking photos of him. She found out he was overweight, reclusive, and constantly had bluetooth headsets on. He hadn’t had a regular job since 2007 or so when he started getting inheritances & became a full time ne’er do well. He frequented a bodega & a bakery for coffee w/Stevia & soy. They shared a love of the same junk foods. She asked the bakery owner about him: . . “Oh, that guy. Strange man. Says many odd things. He sniffs the air & makes odd comments to the women. Very particular about his coffee. I yell at him when he buys too much that is bad for him. I am not a murderer! . Girlie. Ha ha! You stir coffee just like him. Three swirls. Two taps. Cedar sticks at angle on the napkin.” . . Taylor felt she needed to stay away, believing she needed to maintain her boundaries. She used the photos of her dad for an exhibit (preserving his anonymity to a certain point), but never returned to her his street. . . Simone, as a GenZer, became interested in Frantz Fanon after seeing a recent film depicting some of his views as controversial & with the encouragement of Professor Allie. . “Fanon shouldn’t be controversial. Neither should punching Nazis. Old Professor Lorne doesn’t get it, but he’s a free speech grifter. Resistance isn’t a call for violence, but is an intolerance, yes, INtolerance of oppression.
