Massive WIP. Working on the show bible for my epic series ‘SPACELAND’!
“my life as a robot dog” 📺✍️ 🤖 🐕 . . #TVConcept #scriptidea #showbible #Winterswick @winterswick.college . . Marc Alpert, with Ph.Ds in Information & Computer Science and Software Engineering headed up the Robotics & AI Lab at Hudson University. Flush with public & private funds, the lab spread throughout the Westchester countryside taking over old IBM facilities. Thomas (Finn) Hansen, MSEE and Ph.D. in IT was part of a ragtag department of computer engineers at Winterswick College specializing in the niche of animatronics. Students were known to install moving ersatz human & animal parts every so often freaking people out as the tech got more realistic. The program was OK in placing its students, but it was seen as lesser tier and got little respect. . . The annual Northeast robotics competition was hosted by Hudson & Dr. Alpert was showcasing his robot dogs that he started working on when he was at MIT. Finn’s undergrad & grad students wanted to show up Alpert, who was mostly benign but an egoist. . . Taking a page out of Avengers: Civil War & the Empire Strikes Back (Battle of Hoth), Finn’s students had a plan to use drones w/fishing line to trip up the formidable robot dogs. They weren’t prepared for the dogs’ AI responding adaptively, but luckily the team had a few tricks up their collective sleeves. 🍌 . . “road trip” 📺✍️🍁🍂🚗🤷♀️🤦🏼♀️ . . #TVConcept #scriptidea #showbible #Winterswick @winterswick.college . Based on an article on someone’s BFF broke up w/them by @jenglantz I was reading in Nov. Travel can test relationships & maybe are a good proxy for compatibility. Interests, schedule, lifestyle, finances, and energy levels all need to be in synch, whether it’s your bae or BFF. It can also trigger blowups that break relationships apart. This ep examines a GenZ friend breakup. . . Samantha & Taylor both brew up in NYC, but their parents (in their blended family glory) moved to New England to try their hands at second careers. Both debated staying in the city for Thanksgiving, but opted to have a ‘girls road trip’ to Lancaster, NH. . . While there were the usual tensions of two different personalities in close proximity for a day, around Northampton, things started to get tense. The two were close freshman year, but drifted apart. The road trip started like a reunion with catching up & sharing stories. There were no disagreements or arguments, but a series of tacit disapprovals & eyerolls. Sam was annoyed at Taylor needing to fill the silence and in a panic blurted out: . . “I…I just don’t want to be friends w/you. I don’t have a reason & I don’t owe you an explanation.” . “Whoa, where did that come from? If that’s how you feel, fine.” . . Both knew the other well enough to know this wasn’t a spat. Both had trouble “faking” being close to people they didn’t feel close to. . . “I think we should go back separately.” . “Fine.” . . Sam & Taylor’s respective moms were more distressed with this BFF “break up” than they were. It became clear that both feel more connection w/those they interact with online, as both dealt w/the breakup over Thanksgiving weekend amid the backdrop of a wintry New England snowstorm. Taylor never gets any closure & her friends seek to keep her busy, rather than discuss Sam. Sam is revealed to be someone w/a solidified “code” that’s solidifying in brusque ways as she ventures into adulting. . . “the cake is a lie” . 📺✍️🌿🍰 . . #TVConcept #scriptidea #showbible #Winterswick @winterswick.college . . This episode focuses on Autumn, a sustainable fashion studies major who grew up in Darien & later Greenwich, CT. . . The College had fall homecoming coincide w/the NY Fall Regatta & a “friends & family” weekend. While Autumn appreciated her mom coming down to visit from Greenwich, CT, she also spent the long weekend avoiding her. Her mom, Aimee, was vain, phony, & let everyone know she was vegan. Autumn was always annoyed at how her mom needed to be the center of attention & needed to be the “cool mom.” Autumn wasn’t averse to veganism, but felt her mom used it to control others. . This episode highlights how Autumn & her friends ditch her mom (and milquetoast stepdad), but in ways so she doesn’t feel bad. Autumn made sure her mom got a room at an eco-friendly hotel in Williamsburg & scheduled things so there would be plenty of near-misses, but w/contingencies that would occupy her mom & doltish follower stepdad like a cross distracted by shiny things. . . The weekend starts with Aimee showing up to her room with a vegan olive oil cake that tastes horrible. It goes on Autumn’s Finstagram w/a #thecakeisalie hashtag & caption, which turns into the slogan for the weekend. It ends with Aimee unexpectedly showing up at a late night karaoke party with Autumn singing bastardized lyrics to Kid Creole & the Coconuts’ “Endicott”: “Vegan mom frowns when you eat milk or meat Vegan mom judges everything you eat Vegan mom's dress is too see through Vegan mom shouldn’t get any more tattoos Vegan mom think she’s the eco queen Vegan mom doesn’t want you to think she’s mean Vegan mom bakes bad olive oil cake Vegan mom’s gets pouty when she’s irate Why can't you be like Vegan mom? Cause I'm free Free of made-to-order liabilities Thank God I'm free Cos it's hard enough for me To take care of me oh-oh” . . “parade” . 📺✍️🎉🍁🍂🦃 . . #TVConcept #scriptidea #showbible #Winterwick @winterwick.college . “Thanksgiving at the College marked that tense time before finals & the Holidays. The College was always closed on Wednesdays, so a tradition was started in the 80s to have an irreverent holiday themed parade on w52nd the day before the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade. It was meant as a diversion for students too busy or broke to head home for Thanksgiving & was modeled after the Pasadena Doo Dah Parade. . . The parade had small floats & sometimes inflated helium balloons that often looked like X-rated Jeff Koons art. A recurring bit was the UES Nanny & Dogwalker Precision Marching Squad “doing routines & bringing POC and the underemployed to the Upper East Side since 2009.” The nannies always had triplet strollers and there was a minimum of 5 dogs per walker. . . The College’s “marching band” was never officially recognized as such. They never wore uniforms (the closest was when they dressed up like the guitar guy from Mad Max Fury Road) & sounded more like subway buskers than drum and bugle or show bands. They always closed out the parade. . . Over the years, the parade evolved to be irreverent but veered away from pejorative depictions. One group tried to satirize the Dutch roots of the College w/a tongue-in-cheek depiction of Sinterklaas & Zwarte Piet. That was denied despite the valid cultural criticism. One feature that was cancelled was a set of floats depicting all of the 5 boroughs. The straw that broke the camel’s back was the Staten Island float w/a student reprising Olivia Luccardi’s ranty depiction of a SI girl on HBO’s Girls, along with the Brooklyn float featuring the Real Housewives off Park Slope featuring mother-daughter Instagrammers (Minstagrammers) doing all sorts of inappropriate activities while throwing bags of kale chips at the crowd.” . “roamcoming” 📺✍️🏈🌫☔️ . . #TVConcept #scriptidea #showbible #Winterwick . . @winterwick.college went coed in 1970, but all of the attention went to the womens’ teams featured in other eps. This flashback ep chronicles the hapless NCAA Div III 🏈 team, where students played for fun. No scholarships, crappy coaches, & a makeshift “field” on the old Pier 40. . . Michael was an alum (class of ’84) who came back to teach in the Architecture Dept & his claim to fame was stadium design. He worked for a firm in NYC, but was often at the Dubai & Singapore offices. He was part of the baseball stadium renaissance that occurred after Camden Yards opened in 1992 & his firm tried in vain to get a downtown Philly park built on the Delaware at Spring Garden. . . He just finished a glossy book on stadiums & was doing book talks in small bookstores like @spoonbillbooks in #williamsburg . After one of these, he recounted playing football at the College at a dilapidated “field” during a bizarre season when the team started winless at 0-2-3. . . “I was on one of the last teams fielded. I was one of the few players who could kick, so I became a starter. Since we didn’t have a real field, there were only 4 home games. Homecoming was after a month of road games & was dubbed roamcoming. Our last home game was in October when we were still winless at 0-2-3, but now we were contending for the conference title. Football was a curiosity at the College & we just had fun w/a lot of convoluted trick plays. The game was played on a miserably cold & rainy afternoon vs St. Christopher. I was en route to being the goat, def not GOAT, after missing 3 field goals. Time was running out & I had an easy 25 yard att. Players were sliding on the cheap Astroturf full of seams and bumps. I slipped at little, but got it through the uprights…barely. We won 9-8 & were the conf champs w/ a 5-2-3 after beating arch rival #HudsonCollege. No playoffs/parades for us. Just Thanksgiving & finals. We all just went our separate ways after that.” . . “evenfall” 📺✍️👺🌒 . . #TVConcept #scriptidea #showbible #Winterwick @winterwick.college . . This ep explores the “masks” we use & stems from seeing the premiere of @hbo.watchmen. In IT/IS circles, web anonymity is neither good not bad, as that lies in in the user & usage of technologies. I’ve also been thinking about gender, discourse, & contagion. This has a bit of @blackmirror.netflix in it. . . . The College had an internal communication system based on a Slack-like Intranet (web & mobile), intending on closing off a lot of external email communications. This allowed for email, texting, video conferencing, a “structured talk” microblog, etc., but it allowed for the creation of up to 5 aliases. The idea was to allow students who felt marginalized or unheard to create identities to have voice without fear of reprisal. The TOS warned everyone that while the system allowed the creation of anonymous accounts, the should be no expectation of total privacy & anonymity. Nobody read the TOS. . . The Intranet was called Evenfall, an archaic term for twilight or dusk. It was used in typical ways that students communicate: sharing memes, downloaded Tic Tocs, music, test answers, mildly racy content, etc. Things were more or less fine until a few students started to blow up as influencers, but with controversial IG personas. The haters & the sycophants squared off, but everyone had an opinion. Things started to spiral out of control. The IT director was fit to be tied. She sent out an email over the weekend copying the TOS & stating (threatening) anyone found in violation will have all their posted content switched to their real names. “No aliases for you.” A flurry of panicked messages flooded the help desk account w/pleas of mercy from students, along with thin excuses for behaving badly. The President & IT Director had a facepalm moment 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♂️ when a report generated found a great deal of bullying content was from a select few faculty & staff. The following Monday was awkward with a lot of avoiding eye contact. . .
