i think very often about the fact that kate's first impression of bucky is him taking one of her arrows and using his not metal arm to throw an arrow at a hydra goon and kill him. with his normal human arm.

IF YOU WERE A DEITY, WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DOMAIN?
Bucky: Warfare and the Forge
You are the divine patron of battle, conflict, and the weapons forged to fight them. You are quick to temper and obstinate in disposition, and you also govern heroic attributes such as strength, courage, and honor. Due to your domain’s ability to bring widespread death and suffering, much of the mortal realm often looks upon you with fear and disdain. However, you also give life to transformative and regenerative forces such as revolution and rebellion, and your innovative forge has birthed vital technologies of science, beauty and prosperity alongside its spears and armor. Mortals look to you for bravery and prowess in battle as well as skilled craftsmanship, and your mythological equivalents are Greece’s Ares and Hephaestus, Scandinavia’s Odin, Egypt’s Sobek, and Mesoamerica’s Huītzilōpōchtli.
Steve: Wisdom and Knowledge
You are the divine guardian of truths both knowable and unknowable, of all words and languages spoken and unspoken. Much like Death itself, you are perhaps one of the least understood of all deities, and yet the secrets you hold are highly sought after by scientists, philosophers, and theologians alike. The origin of all innovation, your realm is the source of crucial advances in architecture, agriculture, political governance, and military strategy which have allowed many civilizations to become a dominant force in the mortal realm. Your domain may also include the forces of magic and mysticism, and many cautionary tales exist among mortals of those who have unwittingly destroyed themselves or lost their minds in the reckless pursuit of mysteries and technology far beyond their comprehension. Your mythological equivalents are Greece’s Athena, Egypt’s Thoth, Mesopotamia’s Enki, and India’s Ganesha.
Feyn: Nature and the Hunt
You are the divine parentage of the earth and the wilds, as well as the ancient art of the hunt. Your verdant forests, vast grasslands, and lush jungles are a source of wonder and sustenance for the skilled tracker, but conversely a place of fear and doom for the lost and unprepared. Many mortals revere you as a nurturing mother figure or a generous provider of protection and prosperity; however, you are equally capable of unleashing vengeance, famine, and destruction unto those who drink too deeply and greedily of your plentiful gifts. Hunters, gatherers, and herbalists look to you for guidance in the wilds, and your mythological equivalents are Greece’s Gaia and Artemis, Scandinavia’s Skaði, Eurasia’s Devana and the Iroquois’ Sky-Woman.

bucky continues to go by "bucky" because that's his name.
see, his dad was james george barnes, but generally went by george. bucky, being named after him (and likely a series of "james" back down dad's side of the family tree) was then named james buchanan barnes. following the same naming convention, he'd then go by his middle name around the house and at school: buchanan.
only, buchanan's kind of a mouthful. you can't really lean out the kitchen door and holler for buchanan. plus that's a mouthful for his baby sister to try learning. so it likely got shortened down to buck a lot (the slip between "buch" and "buck" is close enough and ck is more satisfying anyway). which then gets nicknamed into bucky because who doesn't like slapping a y at the end of a name to make it more fun and casual.
all this to say: you can call him bucky, it's fine, that's his name. that's been his name since literal childhood. in fact, he much prefers for you to call him bucky over james--james just feels weird. unless you're nat, he's probably going to correct you and ask you to call him bucky anyway. and if you continue to call him james, he's gonna mark you down as a disrespectful ass and make it a point not to make friends with you.
