I think part of what makes willow and tara’s relationship so compelling to me is that I am a sucker for relationships involving women who feel that their partner is too good for them and that if they find out the real her they’ll leave, and willow and tara are both like that on some level.
Willow’s dream version of tara in restless is so fascinating to me. At first, she’s the source of Willow’s comfort and safety. Her room is where willow feels safest and she doesn’t want to leave it. At the same time there’s an ominous quality. She comments that she’s hiding things from willow. Maybe it’s willow half remembering something she didn’t quite notice from the demon finding spell; maybe it’s something we as the audience didn’t see; maybe it’s just Tara’s reticence to talk about her past and refusal to admit how powerful she really is. Still, for all the vagueness and implications, Tara’s room is a place of safety and their actions together have a kind of comfortable sensuality (willow painting Tara’s back while they speak).
Then when she encounters Tara again, Tara is warning her but the warnings are cryptic. Something is wrong; she’s right that something is hunting her but she doesn’t know what it is. Willow can’t shake her focus on the play or her anxieties about being seen for who she really is but Tara is there still acting as a protector for her.
Finally, she sees Tara in class. Oz tells Tara he tried to warn her. They’re flirting. Tara is no longer her protector now that the real her is visible. There’s this sense that her failures with Oz have carried over and will cost her Tara as well. Obvs the real Tara would never flirt with Oz let alone leave her for him but this is Tara as she exists in Willow’s mind, subject to Willow’s insecurities. Tara is a protector. She’s perceptive (so she sees the danger) and the space that she controls is safe because it’s hers but willow is still afraid that if she is seen for what she really is—a shy and frumpy teenager is what’s seen onscreen but the tenor of oz’s warning implies this is also about her behavior in relationships (the cheating maybe or the hypocrisy)—she will be abandoned and she’ll lose Tara’s protection.
(An extra side note to this is that Willow’s perception of Tara is more confident and put together than she actually is. Willow and Tara both admire each other and, at this early point, think the other is too good for them. Each one feels they are hiding something that would make the other stop loving them; each one is afraid of being abandoned if that secret gets out.)

We Never Could Have Done It (I Was Weaker Then) [2/8]
pairing: Tara/Willow (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
rating: M
chapter word count: 4,940
preview:
There is a bright light pressing behind her eyes.
Like when she was in second grade and she kept stuttering over the words Mrs. Jamison had written on the blackboard. Ms. Jamison sent her to the nurse to get her eyes checked. The nurse waved a small flashlight in front of her face and asked her to read out a chart of letters. “In her confusion during the exercise, her stutter vanished. When the nurse had sent her back with top marks on eye sight, and said there was no need to call home over this, Tara was relieved. She didn’t want to give her father another thing to worry about.
She hadn't thought about Ms. Jamison in years. The memory makes her frown.
She brings her hand up to shield herself from the light and as her eyes adjust she sees the canopy of the tree above head. She must’ve fallen asleep. Her once shady reading spot was now flooded with sunlight as the earth continued its turn.
