How I Styled My Zelda(SS) Wig
Zelda’s wig is by far the most effort I have put into styling a wig. Not only is it the longest one I own, but I also had to get creative to solve some obstacles that I came across. It was pretty thick and floofy already so I didn’t feel the need to tease it, that helped a lot!
1: To start off, I had to take care of the bangs. They were so long that they reached my nose!Â
2: Once the bangs got a nice trim, I sectioned off the front of the hair. These sections are what became the front tails that get wrapped in ribbon (I did this while wearing the wig as well as the ears. Doing it like that just helped me figure out how thick of sections I needed so it wouldn’t completely cover up the ears when it was all on).
After sectioning them off I brushed through them really good to get rid of any tangles.Â
3: I then took clear bands for hair and tied them where I wanted the ribbons to start. After a quick brush through the tails again, I took got2b glued hairspray and sprayed the tail from the band down. Using my hand I smoothed it down to look like the picture.Â
I did this to help add stability and structure to the tail while it was wrapped in the ribbons.Â
I then added another clear band to where I wanted the ribbons to stop.
4: Adding the ribbons were by far the hardest part of styling this wig. I kept trying to figure out how I could get them to stay without using hot glue or something to keep them in place.Â
The ribbons that came with the outfit were super wide and the colors of them were a bit off as well. I just didn’t care for them, so I went to a craft store and bought some that were thinner and a closer match in color. This also gave me plenty extra in case I messed up and needed more.Â
Ok, so starting with the pink ribbon, I wrapped it around the top clear band once, and where it overlapped, I used a small dot of tacky glue and held it in place till it dried. I then started wrapping it down the tail leaving even gaps as much as I could. When I got to the end, I did the same thing as the top where I wrapped it around itself and used a dot of tacky glue to secure it. I made sure that the tacky glue never touched the hair, only the ribbon.Â
For the green ribbon I basically did the same thing, HOWEVER you want to make sure that you wrap it in the opposite direction of the pink ribbon! I also tried to make the spaces larger as I wrapped the green ribbon.Â
5: For the rest of the hair I basically repeated steps 3-4 after giving it a good brush through. This section was a little bit easier to put ribbons on since it was significantly thicker.Â
The Aftermath:
I think the wig turned out great! However after wearing the wig for a few hours the ribbons did start to slip and fall out. I plan on restyling it again before I go to con and these are the changes I plan to make:
Trimming the front tails to be shorter and more like the actual length they are in the game
For the ribbons I plan to try securing them with double sided tape instead (nothing heavy duty, just some basic double sided scotch tape). My thought process is that the tape would be easier to get off and less damaging to the hair when it came time to cleaning, restyling, or reusing it (I can update how that goes later).
Hope this helps anyone who might be trying to style a Zelda wig or something similar.Â
