A musketeer fires as they attempt to defend the walls of Whittington Castle in Shropshire. While gunpowder weapons were a major threat to Britain's network of old medieval castles during the English Civil War, they ironically also allowed small numbers of defenders to hold off much larger attacking forces and there are numerous examples of long sieges between disproportionate forces. Standing back, the first civil War almost looks like a conflict of sieges occasionally broken by a battle in a field!
