Magpie Alley
The remains of Whitefriars Monastery are so close to a busy central London street, and yet so remarkably well hidden – you have to be aware of their existence to be able to go looking for them. Magpie Alley is behind an imposing granite office block housing some big law firm on Fleet Street – it’s particularly surprising there is no signpost to the alley, as it is decorated with tiles depicting the history of the printing trade in the area.
Reaching the end of the alley, there is a large flight of steps heading down; there is a heavy gate at the top, making it look as though the steps are off-limits, but it opens with minimal creaking. Take the steps down and you will find a glass wall, behind which is the crumbling Whitefriars Crypt.
The Whitefriars Monastery, like so many others, did not survive Henry VIII; part of it became a theatre, though the crypt suffered a more ignominious fate as a coal cellar. Eventually buried underneath a couple of centuries of redevelopment, it was unearthed in 1895, and restored in 1920. However, its present location is not its original; after the exodus of the newspapers from Fleet Street, their offices were demolished to make way for the current ones. The crypt was at risk of being buried once more, but instead a concrete platform was placed underneath it, allowing it to be picked up and moved to the site where it could be incorporated into the new building.
