It's been noted both anecdotally and academically by many that within many mostly white 'gay' populations, gaydar tends to ignore or marginalize minorities, in a way that is much stronger than in the mainstream. And when I say minorities, I include not only racial minorities, but also things like class background and sexual identity.
Quota, on the concept of gaydar
From personal experience, no one ever assumes I’m non-straight even though I am a strong supporter of same-sex marriage and anti-discrimination laws.
Black Designers can be objective too
Every number after is in relation to one. Two is one after one. Three is two after one. And so on. Every child knows that one is the beginning from which all other numbers arise. And every child knows that one is Whiteness. The beginning. In the beginning there was Whiteness. This is the glittering starting point. This is The Default. This is what we measure everything else against. It’s clear that we as Black and Brown Americans, are still recovering from the racist indoctrinations of the past 500 years. Though laughable it sounds, white Americans, too, have suffered from this crime. As our country began and brown races were systematically denied the right to be human and so internalized the role of the savage, white consciousness bullied its way into objectivity. The white mind became the unbiased mind that objectively observed all the rest. This is called The Default: The belief that the white experience is a neutral and objective experience and white consciousness is the standard consciousness unless otherwise specified. White culture, and American culture as a whole, suffers from the tragedy of whiteness as the default setting.

Thank you so much for this blog. I'm wondering, though, do you have anything from the 12th century in England or Western Europe? When I searched your archives I found late-medieval resources, but none for the setting of my book. I have a Middle Eastern Jewish family, but I'd like to have resources to help me "justify" having more POC. Any ideas of where I can start looking? I've been scouring through tapestries with no luck. Any answer is appreciated; I understand if you don't give one. Thanks!
First of all, the problem isn’t with the lack of “evidence”, the problem is the fact that you feel like the presence of people of color in your work needs to be “justified”.
That being said, what you want can be found by searching the “1200s” section quite easily:(The De Brailes Hours, England c. 1240s) or looking at the FAQ:
I’m looking for something specific, do you have anything on it?

"Historical accuracy" doesn’t necessitate a default white starting point.
All fandoms are ridiculous, I’n sure somewhere out there there are jackasses proclaiming why all the kids and trolls need to be svelte and skinny with perfect curves and abs, and the Strilondes can only be albino or white and the Harleyberts can only be white or southeast Asian.
Yeah, all fandoms seem to have people that suck like that. Don't know if it's a fandom thing or an internet thing or just a people thing. The creators aren't entirely without blame, though. After all, it wasn't fans who hired only white voice actors for the main cast of MLP:fim, and it wasn't fans who characterized Homestuck's human cast as white within the text itself.
This doesn't make those who hassle anyone with non-white readings of these characters any less douchy, but the "I never specified what race they are" or "they're fantasy aliens/colored ponies/whatever and not any human race at all" that you occasionally see from creators and their defenders is basically bullshit when they know how much of their audience is going to assume a white default reading.
And it's especially hypocritical when the creators themselves visibly demonstrate that same white default themselves, such as when almost any new character that is deliberately characterized as non-white in MLP is also made a non-pony, whether Zebra or Buffalo or Horse. Or when Hussie refers to the kids in text as having "pink skin" or being "white rappers".
Even though I myself didn't have as much of a problem with it, I had to give Hussie some credit for pulling the Caucasian page when he realized the people defending it were exhibiting exactly the kind of unapologetic vitriolic racism that the page's critics accused it of endorsing, but it would be nice if he (and Lauren Faust, and any number of other white media creators who fail to consider the possibility of non-white audience members until after it's too late to include overtly non-white characters in their cast) had the foresight to realize this would be an issue to begin with, years ago, when first designing his characters.
