Nina Simone released this song in 1967 on her album 'Nina Simone Sings the Blues'. This was one of Simone's "civil rights songs" and it was written by Langston Hughes. Simone and Hughes' angry lament was aimed at the white racist reaction to the US civil rights movement and the damning thing about this song is that it could have been written yesterday about the current white racist reaction to the Black Live Matter movement and the push to defund the police. Ground fighting remained relatively light in Vietnam yesterday but American pilots flew more missions against North Vietnamese targets than ever before in the war. A military spokesman in Saigon said that 197 missions had been flown against targets from Hanoi and Haiphong down to the demilitarized zone.
In Moscow, Western diplomats noted a definite chill in relations between the United States and the Soviet Union. One diplomat described the current diplomatic climate as “almost as bad as the worst days of the cold war."
A meeting of foreign ministers of Arab nations in Khartoum has apparently led to a climate of sufficient agreement to warrant a summit meeting of Arab leaders. Premier Mahgoub of the Sudan, host of the talks, said a decision had been reached to recommend the convening of Arab chiefs of state.
The Administration's antipoverty program came under continued fire in hearings on racial rioting held by the Senate Judiciary, Committee. The Office of Economic Opportunity Introduced a witness before the committee to deny charges by a Nashville police chief that a "liberation school” there was teaching "hatred” of whites while being sponsored by Federal funds, However, the witness, under intense questioning, said
the O.E.O. had made no payments to the "liberation school.”
As the hearings continued, it appeared that some liberals who have long been identified with the civil rights cause share the opinion that the recent widespread Negro riots may drive white Americans into making a choice between massive repression of Negroes or the mobilization of national resources to bring them into the mainstream of American life.
Conversations around race and privilege are usually met with a kind of silencing, distancing, and resistance from white-bodied individuals. There is often a collapse of the reflecting, thinking space and an aggressive assertion of personal innocence on the part of the white-bodied person; this is mixed with a seeming inability to engage the systemic.
