Every new episode of Critical Role Campaign 4, I watch the show and I know they pronounce Thjazi’s name as /θi.ˈɑ.zi/ most of the time — theta, the ‘j’ is usually a full vowel instead of a glide, three syllables, z is a simple voiced fricative.

But then the episode ends and I’m looking at the spelling in text and my brain ALWAYS reads it as /ˈtʰʲɑ.ʤi/ — The “th” is an aspirated stop like in Thaisha, the j is a vague palatialization that I skip half the time, only two syllables, and the z is an affricate if not a full palatal stop /ɟ/.

Like I cannot convince myself to read the letters T h j a z i like they do in the show when I’m looking at it. It’s only been two weeks so maybe I can learn, but right now it’s a STRUGGLE.

#I have the same American accent problem as Brennan where if a word has a /j/ I will make it an /i/ and give the word a new syllable #like the name of the city always ends up sounding like ‘maquillar’ (Esp)#with different syllable stress of course. but those three syllables in that order #so like I get where ‘Thjazi has three syllables’ comes from #but wow no I can’t read that name and make those sounds in my head #critical role #cr4 #thjazi fang #WHICH ALSO #I’m not going crazy right Thaisha is using the Th as an aspirated stop #so why does Thjazi get a fricative #unless your argument is that the underlying /j/ sound is pushing the /t/ to /θ/ and /j/ to /i/ which #definitely isn’t something palatals usually do #they’re usually magnets pulling sounds TOWARD them not repelling them #Brennan your latinization of orcish spelling conventions is inconsistent and it is confusing me #perhaps that was the goal

Not sure what it’ll change but he was at least receptive to what I had to say and he made space for me to share my emotions, which is what I needed.

Yesterday morning, I had a bad dream where my dad was deadnaming me and outing (closeted in the dream ig) me as trans, just being v transphobic. I was dreading Father’s Day and having to call him, but I do it eventually and he doesn’t answer (thank god) so I just send him a text to wish him happy Father’s Day.

He deadnamed me in his reply 🙃
