This morning with my cup of tea, I thought I would do a bit of planning. I've no idea if I will get the arts grant I applied for, but if I do I need to produce 6 sculptures in 6 months, a range of cats and dogs. It makes sense to plan these subjects so they cover skills I need to master. So that once completed, I will feel confident I can produce any kind of canine or feline request. I'm pondering frizzy curls at the moment. The obvious choice is a poodle. But I quite like to make ambiguous characters, as there are so many lovely mixes. A thought came to mind of a dog I met when I was working on a stand at Crufts. He was a Miniature Piebald Poodle, and his owner had trimmed his hair into the classic Bedlington Terrier shape. He was gorgeous! We all know I love big dogs, but I could not stop thinking about that dog for years afterwards. I am very tempted to try and recreate the memory. Plus that would refine the skills I need for frizzy curls and colour patches. What do you think, good idea? Or do you guys prefer to recognise the breeds more easily? I think plan B would be a standard Bedlington Terrier. Not the most obvious choice for a curly subject, but great colour blend and shape.
