I just love these spinoff novels that are basically an extra Thirteen episode. In The Good Doctor, the Doctor and her fam have just finished a typical Doctor-y adventure and averted waar on the distant planet of Lobos. Back on the Tardis, though, Ryan realizes he's forgotten his phone so, pausing only for a little good-natured teasing, they pop back to Lobos to pick it up. But -- of course -- something's gone horribly wrong. It's several hundred years later, and the ruling humans worship The Good Doctor, a visiting deity who once visited Lobos in a familiar blue box. You guys, I love this. I loved the Star Trek episode where they accidentally make first contact and have to convince the locals not to worship The Picard. I also loved the Tardis as the Ghost Monument, I loved poor Grahem pretending to be the boss in The Witchfinders. The Man Who Sold The War

One of the more interesting elements of the biography is that Isaacson was able to spend the final months of Jobs' life with him. It's not often that one has the privilege to know that they are dying, the time to ruminate on it and a handy biographer near to record the experience. Jobs was not a nice person, in fact he was often quite horrible, but there's no arguing his influence on our lives and our future. Isaacson does a lovely job of capturing Jobs' final feelings on meaning, purpose and legacy in this experience he might have dubbed iLife.

(One side note: this special was filmed five years ago. As a television journalist I'm proud to say my voicing is much better now, even if it is a little cringe-worthy to hear how it used to be. I share with you the good, the bad and the ugly. Cheers, Josh)

We Die Alone is the incredible, true story of one man's survival during a World War II, special operations mission in Arctic Norway. I don't want to tell you any more about the story than that, so I don't spoil anything. In fact, skip the preface by Stephen Ambrose. His high praise serves the book well, but what he gives away damn near spoils the story; I read it last and was so glad I did. Like Ambrose, though, I could not put this book down. I found myself on the train from NYC to DC last night and realized I literally had my jaw dropped while reading it. My traveling companion kept asking if I was okay. No, I wasn't. It was killing me to not have anyone to discuss this story with. Please, please read We Die Alone, so I can have someone with whom to share my amazement.
