I have had this blog for quite some time, but never felt my writing was sufficient enough to be shared publicly. What Iβve realized in the two years since that point, is that in simply putting my thoughts to paper, it is enough. Iβve come to utilize writing therapeutically, as so many others have, and it has truly helped me see emotions and thought processes I could not recognize otherwise. So here is the beginning to making my work public. In putting it on the internet, I can only hope that others may relate to it and find solace in reading it, as I have found in writing it.Β
Cheers
The thing we do
I wake up to what seems to be a sunny morning, part of me is surprised at this because the rain ushered me to sleep the night before. Itβs the weekend and that means I go to church today. The attire is to be as comfortable as the climate would allow. Shirt (long sleeve), soft pants & loafers. Itβs all routine now. But we gotta look good for Jesus or so we say. I leave home, walk with an umbrella because the rain always shows up uninvited. Mommy says the weather has his job to do and so do we, so I try my best to never complain about the miracles weβve turned ordinary. I finally get there - church. People are smiling. The week brought its hardships but they still find a reason to smile. Iβm climbing up the steps now, each conquered floor brings me closer to the singing. The unison of voices reverberate of the walls as it hugs the space around me & warms the air. I could never find a word for it. The slow rise of your heartbeat as it changes pace, how out of breath you feel, but youβre still breathing, youβre still breathing. I make it to the congregation. The singing is in full swing now. It greets you, each lyric like a soft kiss - warm, wet, enough to make you blush. The warmth has consumed you by now, the milieu youβre in is a steady climb to peace. You canβt help but join the jubilation. Raise your hands in celebratory praise, because the God that seemed so distant isnβt anymore. The peace that was impossible to find is right here. The family void of love is overflowing with it now. This is the thing we do. We forsake not the assembling of ourselves. We need each other to survive. - r.n
47 Ronin, Keanu Reeves, and other small but maybe not unimportant things.
So on Saturday night, the night the world technically comes alive. I took it upon myself to venture out and go to the movies. My major objective was to have a look at "The Hobbit, The Desolation of Smaug". Unfortunately, the thing with the internet and pre-ordered tickets, meant that this turned out to be a negative for me. Besides this my 'friends' weren't cool enough to want to go and watch it with me. So I opted to go the movies alone. Which turns out to be a taboo of some sort. Like why? What's so bad about going to the movies alone? I told my friends that they can go and take in The Hunger Games and we'll just meet up afterwards. Thus, the perfect Saturday night outing was planned. Unfortunately, no Hobbit for me. So as I stood there, disappointed at the head of the line at the Cashier's I opted for my second choice, '47 Ronin'.Β
There are some movies you just enjoy better in the company of your lonesome. I'm not really a big Keanu Reeves fan, except for his 'Matrix' blow up. But the thing about movie covers, is that they tend to be misleading. He wasn't really the main hero in the movie. In fact, as the title suggests, the movie was entirely about these 47 Samurai, who became Ronin, because they failed to protect their Lord. The was movie based on Japanese culture, history, legend and folklore. The separation and distinction of high-born and low-born was ever present through out the movie. Overall it was a movie about honour, justice, love, brotherhood and revenge. Also the fight scenes were pretty badass! Plus the ending was perfect. I'm not a fan of spoilers, so i'm not going to say how it ended.
But I'm really glad I watched this alone. That I did not fall into the cracks of peer pressure, which basically alludes that if you go to the movies by yourself, you're lonely and a very sad individual. Treating yourself to a movie you really want to see, or didn't, but still ended up enjoying is a great gift to yourself. And it's okay to give yourself gifts sometimes. As Derek Walcott so succinctly puts it, "You must learn to love again the stranger that is yourself".Β
