killer moth … again

it all happens so fast. the consequences of their stupid actions, coming down around them. these two fools, they'd take any job that fell into their laps. if luna told odette to jump, the latter would ask how high. if the woman was propositioning a project, ratcatcher wouldn't be far behind.
this one had been too good to be true from the start. they should have known better — that they were messing with a crowd that had far more leverage than they could ever dream of. gotham's crime families? really? who did they think they were, the next falcones?
it was stupid. they know that now - but it was already too late. guns are rapid firing, dumb and dumber have hunkered themselves down behind a shipping container. around it they peek, trying to get a better view of their adversaries. nothing more than hired mob help, though these goons vastly outnumber them.
odette has an army of her own, yet these thugs already know that. the shots blasting off aren't for ratcatcher herself, but the vermin she calls her children. eyes are wide behind gas mask, a wet fog coating the lenses as her breathing picks up. their saddened squeaks, their cries for mother — she hears it all.
out into the open she runs; to make it stop, somehow, anyway. luna grabs her by the arm, forcibly yanks her friend back into cover. again, odette tries to bolt, and again luna restrains her.
frantic, desperate wriggling in her grasp. ❝ no, NO! please, luna please, 'dey're hurtin' 'em, 'dey — ! ❞ moth is shushing her, either to soothe the woman or keep their hiding spot for just a little longer. whichever the reasoning, odette won't obey. ❝ 'dey're all I have! 'dey're all I have! please! 'dey need me! let me go! please! ❞
