Hey I saw your post about your doubts for your Spamtenna fic, and when looking for a link for it I saw it’s not actually posted yet.
Panicking about it being good enough or not getting attention when you haven’t even posted anything feels a bit silly ya know? It’s like counting your chickens before they hatch, but instead of expecting a bunch of chickens, you don’t think any will hatch! I 100% believe your fic will be really good, and with how obsessively I check the Spamtenna tags on AO3 I’m sure I’ll end up reading it, but comparing yourself to other fics before even posting isn’t good for you. I’m sure you know that placing so much of yourself self worth on the possible attention of others online is a recipe for disaster, but that can’t be changed overnight. So I’ll give some (unprofessional and uneducated) tips to get attention for your fic instead.
If you want to build excitement for your fic before you post it why not try posting little snippets of writing that will get people’s attention without giving the whole fic away? Give a sneak peak of an intense argument, a cute fluffy moment, or a point that leaves readers on a cliffhanger! Think of the key points you were dying to write, the bits that would play out in your mind nonstop until you wrote it down (and maybe even after that!) and give people a little taste to leave them wanting more! You mentioned making a cover for your fic, so try posting that as well! They Say don’t judge a book by its cover, but the cover IS meant to grab potential readers attention! You could also go the classic route of posting chapter by chapter, that way people will see it pop up on AO3 and check it out, especially if you don’t have it completely written out yet (I would recommend having a bit of a buffer of written chapters in this case). Some may even subscribe to it so they can catch updates right away! (that’s what I do at least)
I’m not a writer, but I have posted fanart that’s gotten lackluster notes on here or other platforms. I’ve also posted some that blew up and still gets the occasional note to this day! A big part of that is luck, the size of the fandom, when it gets posted etc. But your work is never going to get any attention if it’s never put out there to begin with.
I’m too anxious to send this out of anon, so you don’t have to answer at all! I just saw you were kinda beating yourself up over this, and I wanted to let you know that you have one person rooting for you, if nothing else :)
Hoping this anon finds this, because I've legit kept this in my askbox for almost a year because I reread it every time I doubted my fic. I genuinely cannot put into words what this message means to me, especially after Mistaken for Strangers was posted 6+ months later than planned due to my medical emergency and prolonged recovery.
The first chapter of Mistaken for Strangers has just been posted, and I want to thank you, anon, for giving me hope to turn this idea into the first published 6k words, and now the 25k draft, into something the public can (hopefully) enjoy.
