Everyone thinks Will got his empathy from his mom as well as her looks and bone structure. His dad was a big strong guy, a real man's man and he fixed boats so everyone jumped to the same conclusion. His dad may have been what he was, but he was also incredibly intelligent and it was from him Will got his empathy. He knew Will's mom did not want t get married or have a kid. She had had big dreams and ambitions but had been convinced, begged even by Will's dad, to keep her baby and get married. She put on a brave face and no one suspected anything.
A few months after Will was born, his dad approached her and handed her 3400 dollars, everything they had saved. He told her if she wanted to leave she could, he wouldn't beg her again or make her stay. He could tell she was slowly dying a little inside each day and he loved her too much to watch her be in pain. She hugged him, kissed him, told him thank you and left, never looking back. It was their one year anniversary.
It is why he did not tolerate Will badmouthing her, because if he had not let her lave, she would have stayed and done her best to give them a happy home even though she would have been miserable.

Same anon as before! First, I meant to say *won't make you hesitate to write more (oops!) and second, you're so amazing OMG!! I want to be as calm as you one day I swear! Anywho, any "day in the life" fics you wish to write with Will's dad would be great, but perhaps a Halloween one since it is the season? Like Will's dad helping him with a costume and taking him trick or treating? Or maybe he wants to but can't b/c they live on a boat in a boatyard? IDK, you'll do it justice either way!
Heh hey nonny :D come off anon and say hi, be friendsssssss!
Also… I get calm when I don’t want to aggravate a situation that won’t be eased. It will be a shitstorm regardless, but currently I am very annoyed that the responder hurt my friend deeply. I hope they see that, eventually, even if they do nothing about it now. Trust me, I can lose my head hella ;)
As to your request… something I can pull from a personal experience of mine, that I thought would be very cute for our little Will. Here I think he’s about seven.
"Are you sure?"
"Don’t want to phone a friend?"
"Nope."
"Ask the audience?"
"Dad."
"Well… you best be sure you know how to make an entrance. Do you wanna practice?"
Will grins, nods, and runs outside, slapping the screen door against the frame. Moments later he’s back, stumbling over undone shoelaces to race back to his room and grab the most prized item of his costume. The most hard won, the most important.
Then he’s off again, streaking through the door with another snare-drum slam, and down the long driveway to pretend to make his way to the house as though it were not his own.
Will’s dad waits, rests his weight against the wall of the kitchen as he sees his son through the window make his way back towards the front door, walking straighter, not scuffing his shoes or slouching. His glasses - still new, from last week - slipping down his nose until he pushes them up with his thumb.
Once at the door, Will knocks, twice, straightens his shoulders and waits. Slowly, deliberately, the door opens, and Will’s dad gives Will a very stern look.
"Can I help you, young man?"
Will takes a deep breath. “Trick or treat, sir.”
"Oh yes? And what’s your trick?"
Will blinks.
"One must have a trick if they want a treat for it."
Will chews the inside of his lip, watches to see if he can find his dad beneath his elaborate act as this stranger, and sees the man wink just once, slowly, to reassure him.
Without a word, Will pulls out his dad’s old wallet, gutted and oiled to fall open easily. Within, a photo of Will from school, and a laminated photocopy of an FBI ID badge that Will had found on the computer, the watermark still across it exclaiming NOT FOR OFFICIAL USE.
"Agent Will Graham, FBI."
Will’s dad watches him carefully for a moment, lips working not to smile in pride and amusement at seeing his Will so straight-backed and serious.
"Do you have a warrant, agent?"
Will grins, letting his badge dangle between his fingers as he digs around in his pocket for a piece of paper, the one thing he had run so fast into his room for. Upon it, at the very top, in green felt tip and very careful block letters, the words “WILL’S WARRANT”.
Needless to say when Will came home two hours later, his dad following up behind to close the gate, his bag was overflowing.
Will can count on one hand the times his dad hit him and still have most of his fingers left over. The first time was when he was 5 and had spent all day in a fractious mood, disrupting his dad's work and generally being a nuisance. At the end his dad had lost patience and swatted him on the butt. What had hurt Will most was seeing how sorry his dad was to have raised a hand to him.
The second time was before his 10th birthday on Mother's Day. The holiday had always brought a pained bittersweet smile to his dad's eyes and face and Will had said something cruel and derogatory about his mother. His dad's hand caught him across the mouth, not very hard, but hard enough to sting and stun Will into silence as his dad, eyes full of anger, told Will in no uncertain terms that he was never to speak so disrespectfully of his mother before he walked away.
Later, he came back, hugging Will, speaking softly, telling him that regardless of what she had done she was still his mother, the woman that had given him life and the woman he still loved. .Again, it was the remorse, and guilt and pain in his eyes that hurt Will more than the blow ever could.
drawartz replied to your post “A thing that hit me today in regards to Will having a good dad that it...”
And let's not forget his dad taught him to fish, and to fix boats, among other things... Will would've followed in his dad's footsteps and went to a boatyard of he decided to quit the FBI. That speaks /mountains/ of love to me~
YES YES YES!! I think 99% of fics that mention his dad have him be just some abusive drunk. I think I've even read a meta way back when that says Will had an abusive childhood but it may have been a fic too. People can write what and how they want. I've read many good fics that had him have a bad dad but now...I still voraciously gobble the fics and kudos and comment if liked them...it just irritates the hell out of me to see it.
A thing that hit me today in regards to Will having a good dad that it seems everyone has overlooked...
His mom left them. His dad could have easily dumped Will off on a family member or hell, a stranger but no. He kept him and raised him.Think of our modern times and how often you see a single dad.
In the time frame of the book, the time period Will grew up in, it was incredibly rare for there to be single dads, leastways from what I have read and been told by family who grew up during then. Even following the updated time frame of the series it still would have been uncommon.
So Will's dad went against the societal grain and raised his son on his own. I dunno...to me, that speaks of love.

Don't have any headcanons for you or anything.... but I'll say HI! And ask how your day is going?!
Fishy! *pouncescuddles and smothers with love and possibly chocolate sauce…possibly* You never need a headcanon to talk to me! Just pop in scream “AAAAAAGH!!” and I will respond with “AAAAAAAAAAAAAUGH!!” and that is how you start a dialogue. =D My day is going good! Slothed around in bed till noon, watched Gen 1 Transformers, ran errands with my roomie and am makin nummy foodstuffs for dinner! How bout you? Oh also I just drank a GIGANTIC mug of coffee so I am hyped to hell on caffeine!Â
And now I got a pug staring judgmentally at me because I wouldn’t give him a treat.
Here, have a Will had a good dad headcanon.
Will’s dad was not the best cook, but he was far from the worst. Manly he was too exhausted after 10-14 hour hour workdays but he could make gumbo, jambalaya and chili extremely well. Every payday he would make sure to have enough money set aside (even if he had to skip lunch for a week) to buy the ingredients to make one of those dishes for he and Will.
He always let Will help make it too. At first it was just handing him the ingredients when Will was really little. Later, as he got older, he would let him start to chop and measure things.  No matter how little money there was, his dad made sure they ALWAYS had their little payday feast.
