Ali Farka Touré’s “Heygana”, from his album The River. Farka Touré was the only one of 10 children to survive infancy, a shocking testimony to the continued plague of infant mortality in West Africa today. His nickname “Farka” means “donkey”-- given his survival, it is appropriate. Like many West Africans, Farka Touré was multilingual, speaking Songhay, Fulfulde, Tamasheq, and Bambara. He probably also knew French.
