Six things that need to be said particularly to folk who are in their mid to late 40s.
1. Demeaning a child's behaviour is not "tough love." Attacking a child's self esteem is not "constructive criticism." That's called bullying. Stop it.
2. Hold less grudges. Hold more conversations.
3. Thereβs a good chance you're kids were never ready for university. They were ready to get far far away from you, whatever it took, and uni was a convenient route to accomplishing just that without raising concerns. Big difference.
4. Communication rooted in expectations will take you much further than assumptions rooted in principles.
5. Having a different opinion doesn't necessarily mean a person is wrong; it means you disagree. For a person to be 'wrong,' there needs to be missing or contradicting factors to their argument, not you feeling some type of way about what a person is saying being different from what you've accepted as valid. Ugh.
6. Stereotypes can't be categorised as "true" or "not true." No person or group of people is so one-dimensional that a blanket statement will ever validate their existence. Stereotypes are either incomplete stories missing a LOT of details or utter nonsense. Fight me.
Yall be nicer to each other.
