Here's the pitch they're getting: "AI will build your website in minutes! AI will write all your content! AI will handle your SEO! Just pay us $99/month and your online presence is handled!"

Here's what actually happens: They get a generic site that looks like a template (because it is), filled with content that could describe any business in any city (because it was), on a platform they don't own (important), with no real SEO strategy (critical), and no one to call when something breaks (inevitable).

AI is genuinely useful for some things. I use it. Most web developers use it. But a website isn't a document you generate once and forget. It's a living thing that needs maintenance, real content, actual strategy, and someone paying attention to it.

What a small business actually needs in 2026 is not that complicated:

— A fast, mobile-friendly site that loads in seconds — A Google Business Profile that meets search intent and regularly maintained — Content that answers real questions real customers are asking — Someone who knows what they're doing to watch over it

That's it. That's most of the battle.

You'll enter the personal neocities/nekoweb page of someone and it will be filled to the top with pictures larger than life without alt-text; a layout that can only be barely visible with a computer screen, due to it being made with only a computer in mind in whichever browser the user used; auto-playing music that plays as soon as you arrive to the site; low-contrast and ridiculously small text in difficult-to-read fonts; and if you are particularly unlucky, the webmaster may have tried to recreate a scene-rave vibe and added sufficient flashing imagery that their page reminiscent of a brat album official lyric music video.

Of course, the average person with our prior experience trying their hand with HTML and CSS wouldn't be able to make a fully responsive and neatly coded website overnight, and many indeed search for the specific 'hand-made' feel of early web design.

Yet I find it ironic how many people will simply not see the need to adapt their websites; to at least not make it aggressive to screen-readers to see. There is a huge importance online in the aesthetic of the page and much less so in the accessibility of it... Technically, making a page easy to read isn't hard at all--pure text is easy to see and change--being able to style it and keep it accesible is the trouble, and having a blank white page with Times New Roman black letters and some links isn't exactly appealing.
