Summer weaving workshop at Sätergläntan
I have recently returned from the most wonderful week of weaving at Sätergläntan Institute in the beautiful area of Dalarna in Sweden, where I led the 7 day course ‘Contemporary Tapestry’. It was not my first time in Dalarna, having visited this beautiful region when I lived in Sweden whilst studying at Konstfack back in 2014, but it was my first time visiting the amazing Sätergläntan, which is truly a unique institution with it’s focus on traditional slöjd and handcraft in the most picturesque landscape. There were over 100 residents staying on site, taking part in a range of courses from basketweaving, woodwork, embroidery to experimental technical weaving with my Konstfack pal Matilda Dominique.
Over the duration of the week we experimented with a wide range of tapestry techniques, drawing from different weaving traditions from the ancient andeans to the bauhaus, creating samplers focusing in on various techniques of interest to each participant. I then introduced some design methods in a day of design activities in order for each participant to hone their skills to create their own unique design to weave for the rest of the week.
It was fantastic to see how each student took the fundamentals of tapestry in their own direction, resulting in a really diverse range of beautiful final outcomes. Thank you to all the students for such an inspiring and fun week of weaving, and a big thanks to Sätergläntan for inviting me to lead the course. I cannot wait to return next year! If anyone reading this is interested in joining us next year, you can now register your interest for summer 2019 here. I look forward to seeing you there!
