Today is World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. Throughout my trip, there was one really sad constant. With the exception of the stretch between DC and Pittsburgh where I was riding on trails, I saw at least one roadside memorial for a car crash EVERY SINGLE DAY I rode. Most days I would see a handful. There was a day in New Mexico where I saw more than a dozen. And this was traveling on the "safer" roads. For the past few years, there were well over 30,000 deaths annually on US roadways. 2015 and 2016 are on track to be even higher. These aren't just numbers. They are parents, children, and spouses; they are family, friends, and coworkers. The saddest part is virtually all of these deaths are preventable. Better roadway design, public policy, and enforcement can make our roads safer, but ultimately it's up to the people using the road. We all as road users need to do a better job of being patient, predictable, sharing our space, and making responsible choices. #wdr2016 #visionzero
