Makaya McCraven Live Preview: 7/9 & 7/10, Thalia Hall
McCraven (right) at Big Ears Festival 2019
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Weāve been huge fans of Chicago jazz drummer Makaya McCraven ever since seeing him open for heavyweights like Kamasi Washington and Lee Fields. Over the past few years, heās been one of the leaders in a surging jazz world both global and local, establishing his unique vision. 2018ā²s brilliant Universal BeingsĀ (International Anthem) allowed him to showcase four distinct scenes--New York, Chicago, London, and L.A.--with improvised recorded sessions in each location. Last February, he went into self-describedĀ ābeat scientistā territory, reimagining Gil Scott-Heronās Iām New Here as Weāre New AgainĀ (XL). Last summer, he released Universal Beings E&F Sides, cut from the same sessions as its predecessor. Like the first record, it allows different local scenes to converse within and among themselves, and individual players like harpist Brandee Younger (āBeat Scienceā), saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings (āKings & Queensā), guitarist Jeff Parker and violinist Miguel Atwood-Ferguson (āUniversal Beings pt. 2ā³), and saxophonist Soweto Kinch (āThe Way Homeā) stand out. As a whole, E&F Sides is different, though, and not just because the track order isnāt cleanly organized by recording location. In general, itās much more concise and subtle than its predecessor, standing beautifully on its own.
Friday and Saturday night at Thalia Hall, McCraven will play a seated and distanced show with support from WDCB. Doors are at 7 PM and the show starts at 8 PM; as of publication time, neither show is sold out.
