I do have to wonder, if the staff taking care of apes were hard of hearing and spoke to each other using proper sign language, how much of that the apes might pick up by observing? Different than trying to brute force teach apes a fake version of sign language, how much might they pick up on their own just by seeing it and associating certain signs with certain things. I know apes other than humans don’t have the capacity for “language”, but a handful of signs doesn’t seem far fetched, does it?
According to the YouTube video I shared, none of the trainers could actually sign proper ASL and the staff who were hard of hearing, deaf, or who knew how to properly sign were not taken seriously when they attempted to correct grammar and the nuances of the language and those staff ultimately left due to the lack of respect. I don't think apes would sign on their own due to just simple exposure without positive reinforcement. Maaaaybe they would pick up on food related signs as nothing is more motivating than food.
Washoe did teach her offspring signs so it's definitely possible but the way apes use signs is not the same as how humans do.

When Washoe (the first non-human to use sign language) was told that her caretaker’s baby had died, she signed “CRY”, touching her cheek and drawing her finger down the path a tear would make on a human face (Chimpanzees don’t shed tears). source
