man in abyss receives a bamboo hat in the rain is my fav ever tgcf mini arc of all 5 books, bc it’s just so powerful & moving, and also says so much about xie lian.

in ch 196, xie lian tested the yong’an ppl, not bc he was trying to see if they deserved to be saved, but bc he needed to know that in this world there was at least 1 person who cares, who will help a stranger in need; that this world isn't completely devoid of kindness, compassion, goodness. and bc these things exist, it’s enough for xie lian to believe that humanity is worth fighting for, worth dying for.

and that’s why that bamboo hat in the rain meant so much to xie lian. it was bigger than just a person. it wasn’t about that act itself, but what it symbolised. it was a tangible proof that altruism, empathy & kindness really exist in this world. & so that gave him the strength to return to himself, to get up again and fight back against bwx.

bc even when he'd lost everyone & everything, even when he wanted to take revenge against the world for what it did to him, deep down, a part of him still thought, i don’t want to do this, didn't want to harm innocent lives. a part of him was still trying to stop himself from unleashing his vengeance.

He was getting old. In my comic, he was losing hair because of old age NOT CANCER!
