Hanashan is a dwarven female reaver of the Warrior caste and a member of the Silent Sisters.

Background

Like all Silent Sisters, she cut out her tongue to emulate the Paragon Astyth the Grey, and so cannot speak. Her trainer Farinden speaks for her.

Involvement

The warrior caste is fucked right up.

The warrior caste is essentially the bulk of Orzammar’s defenses in which each and every person within the caste, usually men from what it seems, are trained in combat from a young age and taught to harness their rage in battle so they can ignore pain and fight longer. These dwarves are given a weapon and told to go defend their city. But they can’t live in it.

What I mean by that is that these dwarves are trained in nothing but combat and battle. They know hardly anything else. Trying to live a normal everyday life isn’t something many can do, Oghren being a good example of that.

Oghren killed a boy in the Provings by accident because of his life long training as a warrior in his caste. He did what he did in every fight. Harnessed his rage and he ended up killing someone. He talks a lot about how he doesn’t understand the concept of a fight that doesn’t involve killing. Blades are made for killing in his eyes, why use them for anything else? And that mindset is a direct result of his caste. Trying to live in the city became hard for him even before that when Branka got her house and his raised to nobility. It contributed to his marriage falling apart and his drinking. 

The warrior caste treats it’s members like they’re the golems they no longer have. They treat their members like weapons, simple tools to be used and discarded and once again we can see this with Oghren. He thinks of himself as useless outside combat. This caste tosses it’s people into the Deep Roads saying, “Bye have fun! Come back when you’ve killed 1000 darkspawn!” Honestly, this caste’s system is probably why the dwarven population underground is declining. They don’t seem to treat their members like people. Oghren is fucking amazed when you help him, when you become his friend.

He’s amazed to be treated like a person.

Gorim too. Gorim is a dwarven noble Warden’s second and he’s of the warrior caste. Yes, he’s essentially your servant on some level, always asking if you wish things to be done, but he’s always acting like his opinions or life or personal history don’t matter. 

First, there’s the issue of with the military’s minimum standards, both physically and mentally (with, AIUI, increases in stringency on the latter, especially ASVAB scores),[1] and how a large and rising fraction of American men fail these standards.

Second, there’s how those who do meet the standards often find they have more financially remunerative alternatives[2]. Thus, a larger fraction of recruits pursue military careers for reasons other than the financial benefits.

And, third, I keep seeing, only in asides — without hard figures — in other discussions, with faintly worried tones, about how an increasing fraction of new recruits are the children of soldiers.

Me, I look at these trends, and see them all as good things.

[1]As opposed to view often held by people I encounter in which our soldiers are mostly meatheads in the military due to being too stupid for any other lawful employment.

Who will be the first Yuuzhan Vong met by the JEEDAI (infidels)? Commander Zho Krazhmir and his men? Commander Mongei Shai of Domain Shai on Bimmiel? Will the MASCOT Fosh JEEDAI Vergere be with Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Or the use of Lucasfilm using the MASTER SHAPER WAR CHANT -- Fy’y Roog! Will it be KAE KWAAD also known as ONIMI -- the Yuuzhan Vong with the Force?
