Regardless I remain gentle
Olog-hai were only mentioned by name in Tolkien’s Appendices, but media such as Shadow of War explored the implications of sun-resistant, intelligent trolls.
Tolkien also mentioned a ‘wild population’ of Olog-hai in southern Mirkwood. Because Shadow of War didn’t expand on this, I decided to design my own variant!

Az-Kazan was the one to give Bruce the scar across his snout and cheek. Doing so was an act of mercy in the fighting pit. If Az-Kazan hadn’t made defeating the young wild Olog into a spectacle to please the onlookers, a young Bruce would have been killed outright.

World building in the Tolkien verse
A background on wild Olog-hai (Third Age)
One of Sauron’s first and failed attempts at ‘bettering’ Troll kind, wild Olog-hai hail from south Greenwood. Sauron sought to create a breed of Troll intelligent, sun-resistant, and iron-willed. Even though he succeeded, the strong will of these wild Trolls backfired on Sauron’s claim to them. As the population grew, a number of the wild Ologs questioned Sauron’s rule and consequently deserted the alliance.
Despite not following the Dark Lord’s commands, wild Olog-hai still pose a threat to travelers. While not as eager to prey upon Free Folk as other Troll breeds, wild Ologs are exceptionally territorial: after all, their very survival depends on having to fend off packs of Orcs sent to ‘wrangle’ and capture them.
They are no easy ally to Free Folk, and their wildness and unpredictability rivals the wild beasts of Arda. Yet, coexistence is possible if not shaky.
There have been suggestions for making oneself known to wild Ologs while trekking through their territory to avoid being attacked. One such method is singing or whistling.
This choice method of travelers has led to the misconception that wild Ologs detest song— however, singing during one’s walks through wild Olog territory simply pinpoints a traveler’s moving location, and shows nearby wild Ologs that said traveler is a mere transient and not a threat to their territory.
I touched a bit on how Bruce was a wild Olog from south Mirkwood. After he was captured at a young age, Bruce was sent across various regiments in Lithlad where he resided for most of his early years.
Before any of his ‘voluntary*’ days in the fighting pits, Bruce was thrown into the ring as an adolescent. This was an easy way for the commanders of Mordor to weed out the weak from the soldiers.
Trapped as he was, Bruce didn’t like making it too easy for the higher-ups, putting him on shaky ground with most of Mordor’s leaders.
*not quite so voluntary if you wanted to starve. Winning a pit fight guaranteed a meal in the regiment camp.
Another submission- this time ft. a rather harrowing picture of a furious Bruce! I dunno about you, but I would NOT wanna be facing this guy in a tussle. It’s a little sketchier than my usual style, but I think it helps the mood!
