“When do you have to go?” Remus asked, taking Sirius’s hands in his.Â
“Day after tomorrow,” he said, twisting his draft card in his hands.Â
“What are you going to do?”
“I don’t know,” Sirius said quietly.Â
Remus walked with him to the draft office. Every step was heavy with dread. Protestors surrounded the building, all with colorful signs and clothes. Sirius held Remus’s hand tightly as he looked around, shaking out his long, black hair that would surely be gone after this appointment.
He thought of flying around the world to a foreign country. He thought of learning to use a gun. He thought of taking orders and being attacked and having to fight back at a moment’s notice.
“Give me your lighter,” he murmured to Remus. He obliged and Sirius held his draft card to the flame. “Make love, not war!” he cried and the assembled cheered.Â
