I keep saying I want only happy things for Mo Xuanyu, and he will get them in this series, but it might take two or maybe even more parts yet, before he truly gets them. But Jiang Cheng will continue to take very good care of him until then! This follows after Better awake, and has some off-screen attempted rape/sexual assault and the fallout of that.
Mo Xuanyu is shaking. He feels like he did seven months ago, when he ran away from Mo Manor and he knew he shouldn’t have hoped.
Knew that life at Lotus Pier was too good to be true, and he really shouldn’t be surprised that it turned out like this. That it all came crushing down around him.
Mo Xuanyu ran away, just as blindly as he ran away from Mo Manor and just like then, he has no clue where he is supposed to turn to now. There is nowhere left for him to go to after all.
“Fuck,” Mo Xuanyu sobs out and he hides his shaking hands in his robes as he squats down next to the water line.
He used to come here when the constant buzz of Lotus Pier became too much for him, and he doubts that anyone will find him here.
Mo Xuanyu contemplates throwing himself into the water—surely drowning himself would be less painful than living through this again—but he can’t muster the strength to move.
His mind very helpfully replays the incident again and again, and Mo Xuanyu wonders where he went wrong to have provoked something like this again, but he knows when it happened.
It was a former Jin disciple after all, so Mo Xuanyu’s mistake must go all the way back to his time in Jinlingtai.
Mo Xuanyu hides his face in his knees and he lets the tears flow freely.
It was a former Jin disciple who made advances on him today, but since he’s staying in Lotus Pier, Jiang Cheng must have approved of him, must have taken him into his Sect. And going by that man’s words, Jiang Cheng also approved of this.
The rational part of Mo Xuanyu finds that very hard to believe; Jiang Cheng has told him again and again that he would be safe at Lotus Pier, but his rational part is buried deep, deep under his emotional part right now and that says that it’s the truth.
Of course Mo Xuanyu would have to pay for his stay in Lotus Pier. And of course, with his reputation, there is only one possible way for him to do it.
Mo Xuanyu should have just allowed that Jin disciple to do whatever he wanted, he bitterly thinks, because now he’s left with no home and no family at all.
He’s all alone in the world and it’s very fitting that it’s raining again.
Maybe this time Mo Xuanyu will get lucky and catch a cold so severe it will kill him, though with his improved golden core, he doubts it.
Mo Xuanyu sobs into his knees as he wonders how angry and disappointed Jiang Cheng must be with him. Jiang Cheng was so hospitable and Mo Xuanyu couldn’t even bring himself to pleasure one of his inner disciples.
It’s no wonder that Mo Xuanyu can never seem to find a home, if he can’t even repay the kindness that is being bestowed upon him.
“I’m so goddamn stupid,” Mo Xuanyu mutters and hits his leg.
Life at Lotus Pier would have been worth a little bit of degradation, Mo Xuanyu thinks, but now it’s too late.
He ran, and he lost the opportunity to show that he really does want to stay.
“I’m so, so stupid,” Mo Xuanyu says again, not bothering to lift his head and the tears continue to flow.
“Yes, you are,” Jiang Cheng says suddenly, effectively startling Mo Xuanyu, but before he can lift his head, Jiang Cheng throws a coat over Mo Xuanyu.
“This feels a lot like déjà vu and I don’t like it,” Jiang Cheng says and squats down next to Mo Xuanyu, who flinches at the proximity.
Mo Xuanyu avoids his eyes, because he’s not ready to see the disappointment in Jiang Cheng’s eyes, and he wonders what he’s even doing here.
Jiang Cheng shouldn’t know where Mo Xuanyu comes to to hide, and he also shouldn’t bother talking to him.
Mo Xuanyu already fucked up; there’s no need for Jiang Cheng to drive that point home.
“What happened?” Jiang Cheng carefully asks and Mo Xuanyu can’t help the anger that bubbles up inside of him, sudden and hot.
He doesn’t even try to keep himself in check, because his life is ruined either way, so he might as well go out with a bang.
“Don’t pretend to be dumb,” Mo Xuanyu seethes and stands up, throwing the now soaked coat into Jiang Cheng’s face. “I know what this means for me, there is no need for you to personally drive the point home!”
“What what means?” Jiang Cheng asks, picking the wet coat out of his face, and he keeps it in his hands as he stands up. “What happened?”
Mo Xuanyu defiantly stares at Jiang Cheng—not willing to back down again—and Jiang Cheng’s eyes go wide when he sees the swelling on Mo Xuanyu’s face.
“What happened?” Jiang Cheng asks again, softer this time, as he reaches out to ghost his fingertips over Mo Xuanyu’s cheek.
“As if you don’t know,” Mo Xuanyu bitterly says and he’s so mortified when he breaks out into tears again.
“Xuanyu,” Jiang Cheng whispers, and he sounds devastated, but Mo Xuanyu doesn’t dare to trust it.
Not ever again. He was stupid twice now, but never again. He’d rather kill himself than live through something like this a third time.
“Was it not enough what I did for you and your Sect? Why does it always have to be—I would have done anything to be allowed to stay, but that? I can’t take it, not after—I’m a cut-sleeve, but that doesn’t mean—it doesn’t give everyone the right to—why couldn’t you have asked for anything else?” Mo Xuanyu cries out and when his knees give out he simply crumbles to the floor, sobbing and shaking so hard that breathing is difficult.
He is barely down when Jiang Cheng is already there, bundling him up in his coat again, but this time he keeps a distance.
“Xuanyu, what happened?” Jiang Cheng asks and his voice has a cold edge to it that Mo Xuanyu has never heard before.
He can’t believe that this is the same man he met several nights on the piers, who bullied him into going to bed and promised him that he’s safe.
The same man Mo Xuanyu thought he could come to love, one day.
“As if you don’t know,” he sobs out, his heart breaking, and he’s too busy gasping for breath to protest when Jiang Cheng gathers him up in his arms.
“I don’t know, and whatever happened, I would have never allowed it, if it leaves you in a state like this.”
Mo Xuanyu scoffs and almost chokes in the process, but even when Mo Xuanyu starts to trash in Jiang Cheng’s arms, Jiang Cheng stays.
“Please, I don’t want to leave again, I will do anything, I promise, just don’t ask that of me,” Mo Xuanyu cries once he exhausted himself and Jiang Cheng pushes him slightly away and gently cups Mo Xuanyu’s uninjured cheek in his hand.
“Tell me that happened,” he says again, and there is steel in his voice; it’s a command from a Sect Leader who is used to people listening to him and Mo Xuanyu can’t do anything but obey.
“That former Jin disciple, the one that assists Jiang Lei,” Mo Xuanyu starts and Jiang Cheng freezes.
“Liao Heng?” he asks and Mo Xuanyu flinches just at the mention of his name.
“What did he do?” Jiang Cheng demands to know and Mo Xuanyu feels sick just at the memory of it.
“He said it’s time I paid for your hospitality. That since I don’t bring any new talent to the Sect I had to pay differently, and that it’s just the usual procedure. That you had nothing against it,” Mo Xuanyu whispers and he can’t even meet Jiang Cheng’s eyes.
He’s just waiting for the moment when Jiang Cheng tells him that Liao Heng was right; that it’s time Mo Xuanyu starts repaying the debt that no doubt accumulated over the past seven months, but Jiang Cheng doesn’t do anything but stare at Mo Xuanyu.
“Did he touch you?” Jiang Cheng asks, and he sounds horrified. “Did he try to force you?”
“Of course he did,” Mo Xuanyu yells and lashes out again.
It’s only when the sound of his hand meeting a cheek rings out over the water that he stops.
Mo Xuanyu watches in horror as the imprint of his hand shows up on Jiang Cheng’s cheek, however fleeting before his high cultivation takes care of it, and Mo Xuanyu shrinks in on himself.
“I didn’t mean to,” he mutters, desperation colouring his voice as new tears stream down his face. “I didn’t mean to,” he repeats, trying to make himself as small as he can and he startles badly when Jiang Cheng reaches out for him.
But Jiang Cheng doesn’t strike him; instead, he puts the coat he brought back over Mo Xuanyu’s shoulders.
“We will go back to Lotus Pier now,” Jiang Cheng says, and his voice trembles with anger. “We will talk to Liao Heng.”
Mo Xuanyu’s stomach drops so fast he feels sick with it, but he can’t do anything but listen to what Jiang Cheng says.
He briefly debates if it’s worth it to try running away; surely Zidian’s bite must be less painful than whatever awaits him in Lotus Pier, but his knees are shaking and Mo Xuanyu knows he wouldn’t even make it two steps.
So there is nothing he can do when Jiang Cheng lifts him up and carries him bridal style. Mo Xuanyu keeps stiff the entire walk back to Lotus Pier, as his mind is running wild to conjure every last horrible scenario of what will happen to him once they reach Lotus Pier.
“Please don’t hurt me,” Mo Xuanyu mutters when the first houses come into sight and Jiang Cheng’s hands briefly tighten on him.
“I would never,” Jiang Cheng gives back, and even though his face is still thunderous, his voice is soft.
Mo Xuanyu never figured out how Jiang Lei does it, but he’s already waiting for them and his eyes fall onto Mo Xuanyu immediately.
“What happened?” Jiang Lei asks and Mo Xuanyu startles when Jiang Cheng sets him down on his own two feet, though he keeps an arm around him.
The other hand he uses to fist into Jiang Lei’s robes to pull him close.
“Did you put Liao Heng up to this?” Jiang Cheng asks, his voice dangerously low and Jiang Lei stares at him in confusion.
“I haven’t seen Liao Heng all day,” Jiang Lei gives back and he sounds sincere. “What happened?”
“Go find him,” Jiang Cheng orders him and lets go of Jiang Lei. “If I find out that you’re involved I will kill you, too,” he then adds, as if he’s commenting on the weather and a shiver runs down Mo Xuanyu’s back.
Jiang Lei’s gaze wanders to him again, and this time he seems to take in his bloodshot eyes and the reddened cheek.
“I’ll bring him to the hall,” Jiang Lei promises. “And I’ll get Shushan as well.”
“Do that,” Jiang Cheng says, though his eyes never leave Jiang Lei as he walks away.
And while his eyes remain hard and Zidian continues to spark on his finger, the arm around Mo Xuanyu stays soft and protective.
Mo Xuanyu is confused; by what happened, by Jiang Cheng’s reaction, and Mo Xuanyu wonders how one man can be such an enigma. He doesn’t understand Jiang Cheng at all.
“Please don’t kill me,” Mo Xuanyu says, when Jiang Cheng urges him to walk towards the hall, and it freezes Jiang Cheng in his steps.
“Xuanyu,” he says and he waits until Mo Xuanyu meets his eyes before he continues. “I’m going to kill Liao Heng for daring to lay a hand on you,” Jiang Cheng explains as if it should be obvious and Mo Xuanyu blinks at him.
“Why?” Mo Xuanyu finally asks, because it doesn’t make sense.
Liao Heng is a trusted disciple. Mo Xuanyu is just a stray Jiang Cheng picked up out of pity.
“Because my Sect is supposed to be safe for everyone. Because no one here should try to hurt someone else. Because no one is allowed to hurt you.”
Jiang Cheng says the last part as if it should be obvious, as if that is the most important part of his speech and Mo Xuanyu is so confused he just nods.
Jiang Cheng doesn’t seem satisfied with his reaction but he guides him into the hall, where Jiang Shushan is already waiting for them, and she gets to work as soon as her eyes fall on Mo Xuanyu.
She drags him to the side, turns his head this and that way, and then puts her hands on his shoulder.
“Tell me honestly,” she says and Mo Xuanyu knows he could never lie to her. “Are you hurt anywhere else?”
“No,” Mo Xuanyu mumbles and Jiang Shushan seems to believe him.
“Alright. We’ll get something for your cheek as soon as Jiang Wanyin dealt with whoever did that.”
Mo Xuanyu nods again, even though it doesn’t make any more sense from her mouth than from Jiang Cheng’s earlier, but when he turns around and sees that Jiang Lei is dragging Liao Heng into the hall, he freezes in fear.
Liao Heng doesn’t seem to have the same problem, because he sends Mo Xuanyu a look so full of hate that Mo Xuanyu takes a step back.
“You pathetic disgrace of a bastard,” Liao Heng presses out and Jiang Cheng moves between him and Mo Xuanyu in an instant.
“You will not speak to him. You won’t even look at him,” Jiang Cheng says, and Zidian is already fully formed at his side.
Mo Xuanyu is in no rush to move to the side to see how Liao Heng reacts to that, so he doesn’t know what kind of face he makes when he speaks again.
“Whatever he said, it’s not true,” Liao Heng says next and Mo Xuanyu’s heart sinks.
Of course he would deny everything. And if his word stands against Mo Xuanyu’s, why would Jiang Cheng ever choose to believe him.
“If you think you can get out of this, you’re mistaken,” Jiang Cheng informs him and Mo Xuanyu starts to tremble again.
“Did you try to touch him against his will? Did you phrase it in a way that made him believe I condoned this?” Jiang Cheng demands to know and Zidian flicks at his side. “Tell the truth, or I will whip it out of you.”
There’s a beat of silence before Liao Heng spits on the floor.
“Pathetic whore that he is,” he sneers. “Of course I did. He should pay for your generosity.”
Mo Xuanyu whimpers because Liao Heng is not wrong. He should pay for all the kindness Jiang Cheng has showed him already but Jiang Cheng doesn’t seem to think the same.
“Is there anyone else who thinks that way? Anyone who set you up to this?” he asks and Liao Heng laughs.
“As if I needed anyone to tell me that the whore needs it,” Liao Heng tells Jiang Cheng and before Mo Xuanyu can even feel sick with that implication, Jiang Cheng sends Zidian out.
And going by the cut off gasp Liao Heng lets out, he wrapped it neatly around his throat.
“How dare you,” Jiang Cheng hisses and Liao Heng groans in pain. “I sentence you to death for attacking one of our own. I am sentencing you to death for daring to lay a hand on Xuanyu.”
Mo Xuanyu doesn’t know what possesses him to move, but he stumbles forward, right into Jiang Cheng’s back and slings his hands around his middle.
“Don’t do this,” Mo Xuanyu whispers. “Not for me.”
“This is not just for you,” Jiang Cheng says, and his voice is soft again, despite how Zidian still crackles and how Liao Heng continues to groan in pain. “It’s a matter of Sect security, too.”
“Please don’t do it,” Mo Xuanyu begs him, because he cannot stomach the thought that he should be responsible for someone’s death.
Jiang Cheng is tense all over, and for the longest moment Mo Xuanyu thinks he’s not going to listen to him, but then Jiang Cheng relaxes and calls Zidian back.
“I banish you from this Sect. You’re no longer allowed to wear purple or to set foot into Yunmeng. Jiang Lei, you know what to do,” Jiang Cheng says and there’s an undertone to Jiang Cheng’s voice that Mo Xuanyu can’t place.
“Of course,” Jiang Lei says with a small smile and when his hand falls onto the sword he carries in his sash, Mo Xuanyu closes his eyes.
He can just pretend he never saw that.
“Xuanyu,” Jiang Cheng says and gently puts his hand over Mo Xuanyu’s on his middle. “No one is allowed to hurt one of my disciples, but least of all you,” Jiang Cheng says and Mo Xuanyu doesn’t understand it, doesn’t understand why Jiang Cheng should put such emphasis on the last part, but he refuses to think about it any longer.
“I’m tired,” he mumbles into Jiang Cheng’s back and Jiang Cheng nods.
He carefully breaks the hold Mo Xuanyu has on him and turns around to him.
“Xuanyu,” Jiang Cheng says and puts a finger under Mo Xuanyu’s chin to make him look at Jiang Cheng.
“You do not have to repay anything. Ever. You are not indebted to me or anyone else in this Sect. This is your home and we are your family. You don’t owe your family anything,” Jiang Cheng says with conviction and it’s almost enough to make Mo Xuanyu believe him.
“But I bring nothing to this Sect,” Mo Xuanyu argues, because Liao Heng’s words stung deep.
“You don’t have to,” Jiang Cheng softly tells him. “Your happiness in this Sect is all I need,” he promises him and Mo Xuanyu sways on his feet, too exhausted and drained to try to make sense of this any longer.
Jiang Cheng is quick to catch him, yet again, and Mo Xuanyu barely registers when his feet lift off the floor.
“I just want you to be happy, Xuanyu,” Jiang Cheng whispers into Mo Xuanyu’s hair as he carries him away, and Mo Xuanyu is too tired to keep himself in check and so he slings his arms around Jiang Cheng’s neck.
“I am with you,” Mo Xuanyu mumbles and Jiang Cheng hums at his words.
“I will always protect you, I promise,” Jiang Cheng tells him and with what happened today, Mo Xuanyu almost dares to believe it.
He wants to be protected by Jiang Cheng, wants to trust his words when he says that he won’t allow anyone to hurt him again.
And he might even will, once he wakes up in the morning.
