"Shit, it's that late." He groans, reaching for his cell phone to text his sister. He sits up on the couch, grabs his baseball cap, puts it on backwards, and places his feet on the floor as he finishes texting his sister.
He slides to sit down on the floor next to Peter. He nods, rubbing his face and placing his phone on the floor. "Yeah, my sister won't yell at me too much when I get home. Might scold me for being out so late without telling her."
Johnny just shrugs one shoulder as if to say 'Oh well'. He was grown and didn't feel the need to always tell his sister when he wasn't going to be home.
He had not meant to startle, nor had he meant to interrupt. In an instant, regret made itself at home in Loki's expression; he hadn't meant to keep Peter awake so late, either. There was no need for anyone to sit by him, after all. He was more than used to being alone even in times of vulnerability.
Still, the sentiment of it all was a kind one, and Loki's life was always sorely missing kindness.
It took a little effort to sit up and, once he did, he leaned back against the wall for support. His entire body felt as if it was full of lead weights, dragged down and bruised. Perhaps he'd pushed himself too far during their last skirmish.
Or perhaps it was being thrown into a brick wall that had done it.
"It isn't creepy." His throat felt dry, and he gestured to a cup and pitcher of water at the bedside. "Water, please."

Stark Industries, New Wakanda â September 2nd, 2022
âSir.â
âWhat?â Tony demanded flatly, eyes locked on the screen.
Hope Van Dyne leaned in, pointing out the inconsistency in the quantum chronoton particles.
He spotted it, amended it with a flick of his hand, and resumed his task. âThanks.â
They both wordlessly went back to work recalibrating the modified quantum generator. In Tony Starkâs lab at Stark Industries, glimmering infinity stones â red and blue and green, reality and space and time â wavered between them, each in separate containment units as they observed the pattern of warping particles. If they found the right balance, it could be possible to manipulate the very fabric of space and time. It was just a matter of finding the right balanceâŚ
That, and Hope had drawn the line at experimenting with three at a time. Stark could respect that.
Yet another failed beep and red flash grated on Starkâs nerves. He sucked in a breath and growled, yanking off his glasses and pinching the bridge of his nose. âGod dammitâŚâ
Hope glanced at him with a raised brow. âWhenâs the last time you slept?â
Stark sighed, slipping his glasses back on. âLast Tuesday maybe? Biologically I donât need sleep anymore.â
âAs youâve said. But just because you can function without it doesnât mean youâll be operating at one hundred percent. Or even eighty, for that matter,â the brunette informed him, tapping away at the keys.
Stark raised a brow right back at her. âAre you trying to tell meââ
âThat youâre sleep deprived? Iâm surprised you have to ask me that. You made a mistake.â
âA small one! You caught it.â
âBut I had to catch it.â
âHope!â he insisted.
âTony!â she imitated.
Stark glared at her for a long moment⌠then he sighed and closed down the program. âIf itâll make you stop giving me shit, Iâll go sleep. Youâre welcome.â
âThank you,â Hope muttered distractedly.
Stark made an overly exasperated noise and started to dramatically trudge away. âI swear, what the point in being global secretary of defense if no one gives me any respect aroundââ
BEEP.
Stark whipped around. âWhat was that?â he demanded flatly, rushing back to the console.
Hopeâs voice was calm despite the red flashing lights and dire words that left her lips. âCascade failure. Containment on the space stone is failing. We need to shut it down.â
âThere is no shutting it down, itâs self sustaining. Friday, evac the building and take us to twenty thousand feet.â
âYes Boss!â
The alarm was getting louder now, more insistent as Stark and Hope rushed to contain the particles. The whole lab lurched as outside, the repulsor engines fired violently and launched them even higher into the sky. A few windows cracked, but the structure held, escape pods sealing around people at their desks and sending them hurtling into the sky.
âTwenty seconds to failure, Boss.â
Stark grabbed two data cubes and downloaded the schematic and all their experiments. He shoved one into Hopeâs hands. âFriday, take her out!â
âYou bastard!â Hope gasped.
It was all she had time to say before an escape pod sealed around her. Repulsors fired, roaring as the pod crashed out through the window.
âTen seconds.â
Starkâs eyes seared a neon cyan blue, his Extremis activating. He sealed himself in his gleaming white silver armor, nanites boiling up through his pores and closing around his body as he punched in a last ditch effort to contain the stones. Blue, green, red lights flitted together and sparked.
âThree seconds, Boss!â
âShitâŚâ Stark growled.
He abandoned his efforts and closed his helmet, activating layer upon layer of energy shieldsâ!
âTwo! One!â
Stark braced himself for a blast, but that wasnât what he got. A rippling swarm of red and blue and green seared over him...

New York City â September 2nd, 2023
.
In another universe and roughly one year into the future, Stark remanifested in the coming dark of a dying day, high above the New York City skyline. His brows furrowed inside his armor as he turned, not even having to speak to open a search.
Information flooded his visor. Most recently there was something about some idiot kid superheroâs identity coming out... but what was far more interesting was the love letter of a digital eulogy that had his face on it. He was a little younger, sure, less silver in his hair... but...
âIâm dead?â Stark muttered, wrinkling his nose in puzzlement.
Probably the most important thing Tony had learned about the whole superheroing hobby was that shit got weird, but even so, tonight was a winner. One minute Green Gargoyle had him against a wall, ranting at him about how heâd already killed the real Spider-Man and didnât mind doing it to however many imposters came his way... and then it was like the whole world dissolved into dust and came back again, minus the bad guy, leaving Tony alone in an alley.
âHello?â he called out.  âHey, who did that?â
No answer. And no sign of Green Gargoyle either. Tony switched his goggles to infra-red and saw no sign that anybody else had been there.
Well, something must have happened. He needed higher ground to look around. He activated the gecko gloves and started climbing the wall.
Itâd been a shit day, and it showed in Peterâs behaviour. He was quiet, which in itself was about as effective as setting up an eight foot wide neon sign above his head that read âPETERâS NOT OKAYâ. If Peterâs not rambling and bouncing off the walls, might as well assume heâs ill, or moody as all hells.
âM-Mister Stark what are you doing?â He frowned, freezing for a second, before wrapping his arms around his mentor and closing his eyes. God, he could swear he felt every single muscle in his body relax and loosen at the relief of being held.
Tony knew the kid well enough by now to be able to read his moods, and it was obvious that heâd had a lousy day. And now that he was back from wherever theyâd all been for five years, one of the things Tony had resolved was there would be more hugs for everybody close to him.
So he gave him a squeeze and rubbed his back.  âWanna talk about it?â he asked. Tony was even worse at listening to other peopleâs problems than talking about his own, but for Peter heâd give it a shot.
