Today we visited #Vulcano. Not only does this #volcano lend it's name to all the world's #volcanoes, it is also the location of the 'type' #Vulcanian eruption. Even though this is the 'original' volcano it is quiet unusual, because the volcanic eruptions have been happening in a north moving trend instead of directly on top of each other. The oldest part of the island is an infilled #caldera, which is cut into by a younger caldera, which contains #LaFossa cone, the source of eruptions since classical times. This is all attached to what was a smaller island: #Vulcanello that first emerged in 183BC and was joined the Vulcano in 1530. The most recent eruptions on Vulcano where in 1898-1990. Pic 1 shows Robert on the summit of La Fossa with steaming #fumeroles and #solfrataras Pic 2 is the crater of La Fossa. Pic 3 is a close up of #sulphur / #sulfur, formed by the oxidation of hydrogen sulfide. Pic 4 shows James on the crater rim of La Fossa. Pic 5 shows Roger and Robert with a large 'Breadcrust' bomb. Pic 6 shows the island of Vulcanello which has 3 crater and joined to Vulcano in the 1530 eruption. Pic 7 Shows Santi Taxis giving us a tour of the island with La Fossa in the background. Pic 8 shows La Fossa nestled in the La Fossa caldera. Pic 9 also shows our tour from Santi Taxis at Capo Grillo. Pic 10 is #LaFaraglione, a cinder cone that was tunnelled and mined for sulphur and #alum. (at Vulcano) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3VMkT0phuE/?igshid=1pdwcr65o28aw
