Okay let's start with getting a few things straight I love the narnia movies they were a really important part of my childhood and still are important to me so all my criticism doesn't mean I don't love the world that C S Lewis created. With that out of the way I can get to the topic I'm gonna try and discuss in a semi comprehensive way. When I watched these movies as a kid I didn't know that they had any books to go with them and I hadn't heard of the third movie until last year so I simply assumed that the story ended with prince caspian. However now that I'm older I became curious and looked up the series and was delighted to find that there were a series of books that continued to story of narnia but the more I found out about this series the more I felt disappointed in them. I know there has been criticism regarding C S Lewis in the past due to the less than perfect ending he gave to susen but personally I hadn't seen anyone discuss the blatant villainisation of a group of characters that are blatantly supposed to resemble and in some cases ridicule Muslim people. The characters in question are colarmen (it sure as hell sounds like coloured man doesn't it but apparently it's latin for heat) and just try reading this little section of their wikia and try and tell me these characters aren't supposed to resemble south Asian and middle eastern Muslims
After seeing this it's so clear what Lewis's intent was and reading these books now as a Pakistani Muslim it's just so disheartening because I was to enjoy the story but how can I do that when I'm constantly reminded that if I was part of that world I would be considered the villain and that my simple presence would disgust the "good" narnias because a caricature of my culture and religion was used to create the "bad" people in this story.
in the third movie when Lucy and the others are captured by slavers the aesthetics seem to mirror south Asian and middle eastern cultures however when we have to sympathies with some of the characters from the same place they are presented wearing something more similar to old European clothing. So even in aesthetics the audience is being pushed into creating a visual divide between who we should and shouldn't sympathies with. Now I know I didn't cover everything because there is honestly so much to talk about but this has been on my mind for a while and I wanted to share my thoughts.
This isn't even the first time I've tried to criticise this piece of work but everytime I do I'm told even by my irl friends that he was from a time where this was okay like I don't understand how that is an excuse racism and islamaphobia has been bad since the beginning and I have no reason to excuse it just because someone was from a time where it was "okay"
Doing some voltron doodles,,, i love thee darlings.
