Day 5 of tank cleaning. I shook it more and dumped the old vinegar and poured in a fresh gallon. I also took some steel wool to the inside of the filler neck to see how the inside would look once I get in there to really scrub it. You can see the rust mud down in the bottom. I'm going to need to really rinse it out good. The fuel pump should be here by Friday! Maybe I'll have a good project for this weekend. In the mean time I'll just keep shaking and turning the tank to get as much of the inside exposed to the vinegar as possible. Fingers crossed.
The vinegar and bb's appears to be working. The inside looks so much better from what I can see through the filler neck. I can't wait to pull the old pump bracket off and see for sure! I obviously need to take a wire brush to it to get the leftovers. Above: day 1, day 2 & day 4. I have now let it set upside down (p.s. It leaks that way ;) ) right side up, and now it is on the left side. I am trying to let the vinegar get to all surfaces on the inside.
While waiting on the vinegar in the tank, I decided to pull the fuel injectors to ensure they were in working order and not clogged. I started by unplugging the wiring harnesses (which were a bit tough), removing the fuel line from the delivery joint and removing the vacuum line from the pressure regulator. Next I began unscrewing the 3 screws that hold the delivery joint to the intake body being careful not to strip them. Once free a gentle tug upwards freed the injectors from the intake. I stuffed a clean paper towel in each opening to keep out dirt and debris. I then removed the injectors one at a time to clean them. I put together a rudimentary pressurized cleaning apparatus by using a *new* tire valve stem with he valve removed. The valve stem fits perfect over the end of the injector and creates a nice seal. I drilled a small hole in the cap of the valve stem to fit the carb cleaner straw through. Then, using alligator clips and a 9v battery I activated the injector and sprayed the carb cleaner through. While the injectors were out, I sprayed carb cleaner through the delivery joint to make sure everything inside was clean. Once the carb cleaner evaporated off I used *new* motor oil to lubricate the o ring on top of the injectors and in the receiving port of the intake. I gently re-installed the injectors into the delivery joint, and the delivery joint back into place over the intake. I snugged down all of the screws being careful not to over tighten and replaced all of the fuel lines, wiring harnesses and vacuum line. Now to wait for the pump and tank.
