Disco #124: Liquid Tension Experiment - LTE II

         De Dream Theater (DT) ya escribí acerca de “Falling Into Infinity” (#14) y “Metropolis Pt. 2” (#106), pero no se me puede olvidar el proyecto paralelo de tres de los integrantes de DT junto con el maestro Tony Levin, Liquid Tension Experiment (LTE).

        Un poco de contexto: LTE se formó debido a una solicitud de la discográfica progresiva Magna Carta a Mike Portnoy, batero de DT, para que formase una banda con los integrantes que él quisiese. Ni tonto ni perezoso, empezó a hacerse una lista con su “Dream Team” musical, y llegaron dos héroes de él, Tony Levin, bajista/stickista con experiencia en Peter Gabriel, King Crimson, Pink Floyd y John Lennon, entre otros; y Jordan Rudess, genio del piano y sintetizador, que desde el disco “Metropolis Pt. 2” (el cual es posterior a este proyecto) es parte de DT. Y para llenar el cupo de guitarrista está el compañero y amigo de Portnoy en DT en ese tiempo, John Petrucci.         Así que armaron el proyecto con los pocos días libres que tenían, llamándolo LTE y sacaron el primer disco homónimo, que fue furor por la prolijidad instrumental y el metal progresivo mezclado con jazz rock, fusión tipo Mahavishnu Orchestra (#50) actualizada a los noventa. Como todo proyecto, lo dejaron de lado por un rato y al par de años se juntaron nuevamente para armar el segundo disco (LTE II), también compuesto en pocos días y aún más espontáneo, progresivo, experimental y genial que el anterior.

        Conocí a LTE gracias a que en un disco en vivo de DT (“Once in a Livetime”) tocan un extracto de ellos, y buscando sus discos los encontré en el Portal Lyon y compré el LTE II, sin conocer canciones excepto el extracto que conocía, el que más encima aparecía en el primer disco. Cuando llegué a la casa tengo que haber escuchado el CD como tres veces seguidas, maravillado con lo que sonaba, cómo sonaba y al mismo tiempo leyendo las notas que dejaron sus integrantes explicando la idea de la canción. Tiempos aquellos en que se hacía eso.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience play Hey, Joe, live in 1967. The trio, featuring Mitch Mitchell (drums), bassist Noel Redding, and the nonpareil Hendrix on lead guitar, give the song a beautifully doleful, almost somber reading, notwithstanding the left-handed maestro’s extraordinarily powerful, jaw-dropping improvisations. More than a multitude of renditions exist of this composition, whose authorship remains a tad cloudy (most “reliable” sources credit it to one Billy Roberts); this remains the standard bearer, greater even than the group’s mighty studio recording.

On May 30, 1970, Jimi Hendrix took to the stage at the Berkeley Community Theater with Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox (bass), and produced yet another indelible performance. Virtually shocking in its untold kinetic power, this version of Chuck Berry’s Johnny B. Goode is a perfect realization of the guitar virtuoso’s immense gifts.
