Molokov places his hands on his shoulders, and Leonid thrills internally at the warmth of them.
âBut even the best machine needs to be maintained."
âȘlisten,,, sometimes u just latch onto a RLY minor character and draw them a million times in various outfits youâve found. Thatâs the only explanation I have for this plsâŹ
Anatoly: This is my fault. Viigand sees me achieve excellence and it puts a lot of pressure on him.
Florence: What about me?
Anatoly: Sorry. Yeah. It puts a lot of pressure on both of you.
Okay so ever since I was little my mom always played chess in the car and I just grew up hearing it. So the most I know about the story line is what I picked up off listening to the music. What is the actual differences between the American and other production? Is the storyline any different?

I just saw Chess the musical / Sakk musical in Budapest. It was magical *-*
(photos from the Chess musical FB page, I didnt bother with taking pictures xD)
(For the 5 things to change thing) chess?
These are all about in-concert 2008 so that Iâm not takingswings at every version of chess at once like usual
1. More Viigand? Because I love him? I understandthat some of the reason he isnât given many lines/songs is because, even thoughheâll be Anatolyâs opponent in act 2, he himself isnât considered âimportant.â Thereare lots of things stacking up to make Anatoly lose in Bangkok and Viigand isjust one of themâand probably the least worrisome since Anatoly is a betterplayer than him in general. But even though it isnât important to the plot todevelop Viigandâs character, Iâd like to hear of him than âComrade Molokovtells me you want to play chessâ and him singing in the choir during âDifficultand Dangerous Times.â In Broadway, they managed to add Nikolai to the âMolokovand Anatolyâ scene without it being stilted or anything (although they had nosong in that scene so that makes it a little easier). But I think Viigand couldeasily be added to the âMolokov and Anatolyâ scene/song with some minor lyricadjustments and a cut of the embarrassing âGo to hellâ line Anatoly says toViigand after âWhere I Want to Be.â Anyway, @ next in-concert version, showthat Anatoly and Viigand are friends, you cowards
2. Give Svetlana a solo that fits her for oncelmfao. They have her out there singing the Florence version of âSomeone ElseâsStoryâ and Iâll⊠Never understand why. It would be so much smarter to have hersinging the SVETLANA version of the lyrics or to have her sing an Englishversion of the âHeâs a Man, Heâs a Childâ (??? I think thatâs the translation)song from the Swedish version. Or they could write an all-new song for her. Thereâslots of options other than having her sing these confusing lyrics that clearlydonât apply to her relationship with Anatoly (all of the ones about âwould hemiss me if I goâ when itâs like⊠sheâs BEEN left, folks).
3. Cut the Freddie/Anatoly duet out of âThe Deal!!!âIt doesnât make any sense kdggjfj. Molokov and Walter are thinking tothemselves, âBoy, we really have to convince Anatoly to throw this match. Heâsnot going to want to. We have to be smart about how we attempt this.â So theysend in⊠Freddie? At that point, heâs quite honestly the last person Anatoly wantsto take advice from (all of act 1 + âThe Interview,â I meanâŠ) and Freddiehardly has any good reasons to convince him with. Anatoly probably would havebeen more likely to listen to Viigand coming up to him and saying he shouldlose just so Viigand could get the bouquet of roses they give the winner. I getthe rationale is that they wanted to maintain Freddie as a very Main Characterafter act 1 was focused on him right until the end when they did theprotag-switch. I think they wanted Freddie to keep having a lot of songs in act2 so that it didnât seem like heâd just dropped out of the musicalâthat, and I thinkthey wanted to have as much Freddie/Anatoly interaction as possible before âTalkingChessâ so that it wasnât like they were complete strangers during it. Still, the duet in âThe Dealâ makes just about zero sense (even though I sing it atfull-volume every day when Iâm driving :/)
4. Kind of tied to my first point, I really thinkit would improve the beginning of the musical to have a more pronounced presenceof the Soviet team early on. We get a LOT of Freddie and Florence because theyârethe ones who are first assumed to be the protags for the entire show. We get âWhata Scene,â âCommie Newspapers,â âPress ConferenceâŠâ All of which are kind ofshort songs but establish a lot, making it feel by the end like you really knowthe characters and their dynamic together well. So then it goes from âPressConferenceâ to âMolokov and Anatolyâ and you know⊠Nothing about them. Ofcourse, thereâs always got to be an introduction for new characters but in myopinion, itâs best to introduce all new characters at once instead of reallydeveloping one duo and then shoving a new pair of characters at the audienceone second later. It feels a little awkward to have Freddie and Florence reallyestablished when we skip to âMolokov and Anatoly.â Furthermore, other than justintroducing the Soviet team earlier, I would love if Molokov and Anatoly wereable to interact more in act 1. Florence and Freddie, obviously, talk allthroughout it but after âM & A,â the two of them are pretty distant. They donâteven speak in âQuartetââbut thatâs actually an interesting thing that I donâtmind too much (Molokov using âweâ and Anatoly using âIâ). Anyway to sum thisone up, the Soviet team needs more songs and scenes in act 1 and Iâll beincorporating them when I make my own production of Chess lmfao.
5. Finally, a really minor one. Listen, I can beobjective and say that Chess is not the best musical ever written or performedlmfao. And itâs just not objectively good enough to get away with thecostumes/set/PowerPoint slide transitions they use in In-Concert jdshgk??? Florenceâsoutfits are BAD, the set is SLOPPY and thereâs too many stairs for Anatoly tobe dramatically hiking up and down them in âWhere I Want to Beâ and âEndgame,âthe âOne Night in Bangkokâ PowerPoint slides are EMBARRASINGâitâs all too muchin one show lmfao? You know they had enough money to hire Idina to be Florenceand yet theyâve got the production looking like That?
dhkgkdhg anyway thank you for asking, anon!!!!!!!ilysmsmsmsm!!!!!!!!! I love talking too much about chess lmfao
