I don’t think you guys comprehend how miserable this piece of text makes me, specifically the quote from Stalin, “are you following everyone else, too?” Because he’s asking him. He’s ASKING HIM. We will never know what tone or conviction he spoke these words in, but no matter how he said it, he was asking him.
By this time, Stalin had been betrayed by dozens of traitors within his government and army, most of the old Bolshevik’s had abandoned him, and both his enemies and his supposed friends wanted him gone to seize his power. When Stalin finds this speech and it invokes his paranoia, and he sees that Molotov of all people has signed it, he is asking him whether or not he is betraying him. He doesn’t cast him from the room, or curse him. In that moment he chose to ask, and I think that says a lot about how scared he really was of losing Molotov in such a way, and how much he genuinely trusted him to tell the truth.
