Château de Aubiet, Located in central Chevaisé (southwest of Vesuvia). Inhabited by the Vicomte and Vicomtesse de Tristesse and their youngest children twins Verdell and Vivien de Tristesse. Formerly occupied by the eldest Tristesse child, Vesper (disinherited), and illegitimate middle child Amaryllis Leroux (runaway).

The Tristesse family is an old ruling family in decline; both financially and in popularity. The vicomte and vicomtesse have gone to great lengths to keep their positions and the court’s favor. Once the designated right-hands to the former monarchy, when that family collapsed they were left, ill-equipped, to lead.

The Château itself is opulent and raucous; while the central city is destitute and eerie. It’s known far and wide for it’s extravagance, but when tourists arrive they’re disappointed to see the city’s outdated architecture. They have a significant export of seafood and textiles, and other attractions include the classical arts. There’s also a general stigma against magic useage, leading to users to conduct their business underground.

Vesper and River try to reason with him, reassuring him that it was just a coincidence - nothing more than bad luck - that they both lost their parents at that age. They promise him they’re not going anywhere, but once the idea’s in his head he can’t be talked out of it, no matter how hard they try. (The fact that Vesper still experiences lingering health issues as an ongoing side-effect of the relic doesn’t help.)

Vesper’s is from when she was around four years old, of her mother Laurie waking her up one night a couple of hours before dawn and carrying her outside their tent to show her a meteor shower.

She remembers it was a cold night, but her mother wrapped a blanket around them both so they’d stay warm. At some point she fell asleep and woke up in her own bed back in their tent, wondering if it had been real or just a dream.

I’ve talked a bit before about her signature yellow gold nail polish and how she’s been using the same brand/colour for years, but it’s one of my favourite little details about her. She shoplifted the very first bottle of it she ever owned (along with a candy bar) from a CHOOH2 filling station when she was fourteen. The brand is a well-known lower-end one that you can find in gas stations and drug stores pretty much everywhere. Why did she pick the yellow gold and not a different colour? No special reason, the decision to steal that first bottle was an impulsive one (it was her birthday and she just wanted something for herself) and she didn’t even look at the colour before she swiped it, but she liked it so much she picked up another bottle in the exact same colour when the first one ran out. Eventually it became her signature colour, though she doesn’t really think of it that way. She just likes how the yellow gold looks, even when it’s chipped (as it usually is, because she’s worked with her hands her entire life). It feels fancy and expensive, even though the brand is a cheap one; a small touch of luxury in the Badlands. 💅🏻💛

I’m also a big, big fan of her body piercings. I think they’re super hot (River agrees). One of the things I’m most excited for when I finally start playing with mods on PC is being able to give Vesper her lore accurate body piercings. She acquired all of her piercings - she has 9 in total, including her face/ears and body ones - in her teens and early twenties and loves them; like her tattoos, she’s never regretted them.

Moving away from physical details, I also love how she never gives up, never stops fighting even when everything seems hopeless and the odds are stacked against her. She’s stubborn as hell, but she wants to survive - to live! - so badly she’ll continue to struggle against her fate until the bitter end. I think that doggedness and refusal to give up hope (as well as her willingness to continue putting her trust and faith in other people) makes her the perfect foil for Johnny and his cynicism.

4. Oddest place they’d have sex?

Does the backseat of River’s truck in the middle of the trailer park where Joss lives count? (Sometimes the bedroom is just too far to wait, even when it’s less than fifty feet away.) Otherwise, they’ve definitely done it in the cargo bed of his truck under the stars in the middle of nowhere. Also, V’s private pool at her fancy apartment in the Sun ending. Giving the nosy neighbours a good show. 😉

Do have a little AU fic wip where they do it in a dark alley in Heywood, as well.

5. Favourite positions?

They’d both say any, but Vesper enjoys when they’re facing each other so she can see his face (she likes to touch/hold his face and watch his reactions). Riv’s favourite is giving it to her from behind or when she’s on top (both are perfect for holding her hips and offering access to her breasts, which fit neatly in his hands). 🤲 Another favourite is a classic, the 69, their preferred version is with Riv on his back and Vesp on her hands and knees over him.
