I'm going through a bunch of old writing and found a ton about an AU Alim. The story is that Daveth survived the joining and split off from Alistair and an Aeducan warden to warn other Grey Wardens in the free Marches. For some reason I vaguely remember a race against the dwarf warden because that dude was bad for some reason. Anyhow, Daveth meets Anne, then gathers Aneirin from the Dalish somehow, then travels to Denerim where he meets my non-Circle Alim. Alim eventually worms his way into the small company because he desperately wants to get out from under the thumb of the man that owns his debt and hires him out for mercenary work.
Anyway, the following are a couple of bits that never got past a first draft, but they're fun with some nice dialogue. I should really do more with this. Tagging @thedissonantverses because I think you mentioned wanting to see more of this (slap me if I'm wrong - I think you mentioned finished work though. Ah well, I'm a tease).
For Alim, stepping inside The Pearl was, he supposed, the closest he ever came to returning home. There were always warm and welcoming smiles from the men and women who worked there and as often as not, Para would come over to give him a kiss on the cheek and usher him to a table.
It was amazing the affection and warmth a generous tab could buy a person.
Para wasn't around when the four of them entered, but a servant girl recognized him, noticed his company and waved him over to a choice table in the corner. She quickly swept a rag over the table to clear the crumbs to the floor and asked what they would like.
āJust food and drink,ā Alim told her. "Whatever's on for supper and some wine should do.ā
They seated themselves as she walked off to the kitchen.
āNow then,ā he said, threading his fingers together and leaning forward eagerly. āA story. I'll start. A thief, a Dalish and a noblewoman walk into a tavern...ā
āThey ate, paid for their own meal, kept their silence and left.ā said Anne, not at all impressed by her surroundings.
āYou're not very good at this I'm afraid. You?ā Alim cocked on eyebrow at Aneirin who simply shook his head and looked away. āDaveth?ā
Daveth sighed. āAh Alim, I think you just learned more than I'd intended for you to.ā
Alim shrugged, and nodded at Anne. āHard to miss. She has the look.ā
āMe? You're talking about me?ā Anne scowled.
āYouāre the noblewoman, aren't you?ā said Aneirin, beginning to look very tired with the whole affair.
āIt doesnāt matter now." Your guide has decided that thatās as much as Iāll get to know tonight.ā Alim winked at the Dalish elf, who waved a dismissive hand at the other elf and looked away. His patience had been thin from the moment they entered the city.
āAnd yet, youāre still footing the bill for this,ā said Daveth. āStill sitting at the table. Last time I was around you, you were a lot more stingy than this.ā
--- (apparently a lot happened between this bit and the next that I never wrote)
āThank you. I hate to admit it, but Iām sure we couldn't have done this without your help.ā Daveth tossed the purse to Alim. āAs promised.ā
Alim was quiet for a moment, weighing the purse in his hand before speaking. āThis isnāt enough.ā
āItās what you agreed to Alim.ā
āNo, no thatās not what I meant. Iā¦ā Alim tucked the purse under his belt and leaned back against the brick wall of the storehouse. āItās what I asked for, but what am I going to do with it? Back to the Pearl I guess, new set of knives maybe. But then itāll be back to Charon and whatever job heās got lined up for me next.ā
āSounds hard, but thatās not my concern Alim.ā Then to soften his words, āBoots maybe. That pair looks like theyāre nearly done for.ā
Alim closed his eyes. āIāve been holding off.ā
āI wouldnāt. The darkspawn are coming and if they arenāt stopped, youāre gonna have to run sooner or later.ā
That caught Alimās attention, or settled something in his mind, because he pushed away from the wall and fixed Daveth with a look that lay somewhere between uncertain and hopeful. āSooner would be better. And you could use another hand.ā
That surprised Daveth. He couldnāt deny that Alim had been a great deal of help to him; but that had been in Denerim where Alim traveled in useful circles and heard useful things. Outside the city, his uses disappeared and he was nothing more than another mouth to feed, another body to pay passage for. Also it was Alim, and while Daveth liked him well enough, he understood he could only ever be trusted so far.Ā
He shook his head. āYou should leave Alim, but not with me. Iām not hiring help.ā
āYou donāt need to hire me. Iām not asking that. Iām asking to go with you and get out of Denerim before things fall apart.ā
Daveth shook his head. āNot with me.ā
āDaveth-ā
āNot with me. Youāve got no use outside the city and good as you may be with those knives, youāre not good enough. Iām not sure what work Charon had you doing, but Iām damn sure I donāt need you doing it for me.ā
There was a brief moment of resignation on Alimās face and Daveth thought heād managed to end the conversation, but then he thrust out a hand, palm up, and there was a sudden flash of light. A fireball was floating in the space between them.Ā
āThis is what I did for Charon. Iām a mage. And if you donāt think you need that out where youāre going then youāre a fool.ā He dropped his hand and the flames disappeared.
The scales Daveth used to measure Alimās worth suddenly shifted. Yes, Aneirin was a mage as well, but he healed. He didnāt summon fire into thin air, at least not that heād ever revealed to Daveth.Ā
āFuck,ā Daveth whispered. āThatās not what I thought Charon was up to with you.ā
His comment was met with an answering scowl. āI know bloody well what everyone thinks Charon was up to with me. But no, he hires me out for my magic. Doesn't lay a hand on me.ā

Ponytail Dib AU scene concept: Zim trying to distract Dib from going on about depressing shit by speaking of his past life on Irk, safe in the knowledge that Dib wonāt remember anything that could be used against him come morning:
āāā-
Dib, sitting against the couch in Zimās house yet again, legs splayed open on the floor as he lazily eats a slice of pizza. Zimās sitting right across him, legs resting on Dibās, his back against a large machine. Heās adjusting a piece of the tech attached to it and running his mouth.
Zim:⦠And thatās when Zim knew he was being SABOTAGED!! But after gathering my evidence and bringing it to my supervisor, she had NO CHOICE but to see that I was RIGHT! VICTORY FOR ZIM!!
Dib, snorting: Wow, so you werenāt always a screwup? Thatās a surprise.
Zim, offended: Excuse me?! I am NOT nor was I EVER a screwup! The NERVE to even SUGGESTā!
Dib, chuckling: C'mon, you gotta admit youāre not the best at what ya do. I mean, maybe nowadays yourā¦your plans are moreā¦better put together, but back when I was a kid? Half the time youād sabotage yourself
Zim, gasping with indignation: Would NOT!
Dib: Would too!
Zim: LIES!!
Dib: Bro, c'mon, Iām wasted as fuck right now and I still can remember that shit.
Zim, blushing at the nickname: W-well.. maybe! But itās not my fault!! I wasnāt given any proper briefing on this mission before arriving, there werenāt even any scouting notes for me to look at! Had to figure everything out on my own!
Dib, smiling mischievously: That still doesnāt account for like half of your screwups.
Zim, groaning: Oh quit it already! You wouldnāt do this any better than me, mister Judgy McJudge!
Dib: You donāt know that. Bet I could take over the world way faster than you if I wanted to.
Zim, grinning as he noticed the chance: Well, why donāt you try then? Cuz Iām starting to think the reason you donāt wanna take me up on my offer to join forces is because you think youāre not cut out for the job.
Dib, hastily swallowing more pizza, noticing the bait and refusing to take it: S-so you said youādā¦that you were... anā¦Elite Soldier⦠before?
Zim, immediately distracted by the chance to talk about past achievements: Oh yes, one of the best ones in fact! Graduated with honors despite my height!
Dib: Oh yeah, I remember you guys had some kinda hang-up around heights⦠And you say you were one of the best? Despite how much you screw up? *he chuckles*
Zim, hurt but not wanting to show it: Well, Zim has always been a huge asset to the Empire! My superiors could clearly see that, whatever⦠drawbacks I might have had were nothing compared to the benefits of having a GENIUS like me around!
Dib, reaching for his flask: I thought most of your people hateā¦hated you.
Zim, ignoring another sting: Well the envious ones sure do, but not all of them are blinded by my achievements! Some of them valued me for who I am, I even had admirers!
Dib, almost spitting his drink out: You hadā¦you had admirers??
