Progress: Initial Sketch -> WIP 1
So, in addition to plugging away on the fic, I'm also playing around with this some more. I learned a lot on my first painting, and I'm trying a "do it all on one layer" thing I've seen other people do.
So far I'm... Not a fan. I think it's because I went from messy sketch right into paint. I'm used to having clean inks to start with. Maybe I'll backtrack and do some inks, then start again with the rendering? I mean, the inks will be lost by the end, but they're really helpful.
And yet I would love to be able to put color on a messy sketch and then have it turn into a painting like I see other people do. It looks like magic! This is magic I want to be able to do! I also want to get comfortable with brush strokes. Being trained as an animator, it was either smooth, airbrushed shading, or cel shading. That was it! Like, I love texture and such in other people's work, but when I leave an obvious brush stroke I go "Ick! No! Wrong and Bad! Smooth it out!"
It'll also make things go a lot faster, and I love love LOVE and miss so badly the speed I used to have as an animator. If I can learn to live with brushstrokes and learn to paint and render without super-detailed inks, that might get me to where I want to be artistically, I think.
I also really need to start accepting comms soon, because oof Life do be Life-ing. Being able to paint quickly would be really good for that!
Anyway, enoguh of my rambling. See you later!

[image description: gothic calligraphy that reads âLife doesnât give me lemons. It gives me ghost peppers. What am I supposed to do? Make ghost-pepper-ade? ~Verenâ end image description.]
"Hey, Carson, Veren is so sweet," Toby held the small child in his arms.
Carson smiled and rolled his eyes as he strummed away at his bass. "Yeah? Well, tell you what? You try getting up at three am to change him and see if you're so chipper.â
"Alright, point taken," Toby nodded and let the small child hold his thumb. "But he really is a cutie. And he has your face. He's like a time travelled version of you.â
"Really? Look at his eyes and then compare us.â
Veren looked up at Toby with his big eyes. Toby realised that they weren't the russet brown colour that Carson's eyes were, but rather a gentle aquamarine. Like Ari.
"I see..." Toby said gently.
Veren stretched out his little arms towards the brunette and whined. He clearly wanted to be held closer.
"Well, if you ever need help with him, I'm here for you, man..." Toby gently rocked Veren and gave Carson a sympathetic smile.
"Thanks, I really appreciate it," Carson chuckled and put down his bass. He got up and sat on Toby's bed with his friend and his son.
The three sat and watched a movie, simply enjoying the close embrace. The older two leaned against each other in a sort of support.
