From the pantry, to fridge, to freezer, the following is a list of all the essential items you’ll find in my kitchen! Most of these items are featured in my recipes and other posts. Most items are easily accessible and reasonably priced, making eating a vegan diet easy and affordable. It’s just a matter of pulling together meal plans and routines to suit your lifestyle.
Alright!! Here we go :)
GRAINS: Full of fiber and protein, fuel up with breakfast foods like oatmeal, muesli and quinoa porridge. For the later meals, add a rice of choice, farro, quinoa, etc. to complete your main meals. Many of these are gluten free and should be used as part of a healthy diet regardless of being vegan or not!
- basmati and/or jasmine rice
- brown rice
- oats - steel cut, rolled, quick
- wild rice (personal fave!)
LEGUMES: Inexpensive and very versatile, legumes are the MAIN protein in a vegan diet. Soups, hummus, veggie burgers, burritos/tacos, stir-frys and even pasta dishes use many different kinds of legumes so I always make sure I’m stocked up! Legumes are low in fat and high protein, fresh is always best but canned will do the trick just fine! :)
- peas (split or whole)
- tofu (organic, non-gmo)
- garbanzo beans (chickpeas)
- pinto beans
- tempeh ( organic, non-gmo)
- refried black beans
FLOURS: Flour is an essential in any home, and there is many different options I love!
- all purpose flour (most vegans avoid this flour)
- oat flour
- whole wheat flour
- chickpea flour
SPICES: Spices are what will make your meals come alive. I love the simplicity of allowing my vegetables to shine, but sometimes I like to use many spices at once to really make a dish flavorful as possible. I have a large selection in my pantry, but find that I usually stick with a few key ones that I love. Use spices to take old recipes and change them up using a different blend. Some I prefer to use fresh like basil, cilantro and parsley while the rest I’m happy to use dried. I recommend purchasing the freshest dried herbs and spices you can find for best flavor!
- allspice
- basil (fresh)
- cayenne
- cilantro (fresh)
- chili powder
- cinnamon
- cumin
- garlic powder
- Himalayan salt
- nutmeg
- onion powder
- red pepper flakes
- vanilla extract
OILS: I try to use oils sparingly as possible, but do keep a few on hand. There is no butter in my kitchen, other that nut butters, so oil is essential and used in its place.
- olive oil
- sunflower oil
- coconut oil
CANNED AND BOTTLED ITEMS: I try to cook from scratch as much as possible but sometimes myself, and you guys just don’t have the time or desire! That is when canned goods can come in very handy and be a great time saver! (look for BPA free cans)
- diced tomatoes
- tomato paste
- bottled spaghetti sauce
- salsa
- chickpeas
- black beans
- cranberries
FRIDGE AND FREEZER ESSENTIALS:
- unsweetened/sweetened almond milk
- non-dairy yogurt
- tofu
- jams & jellies
- maple syrup
- baking soda
- lemon juice
- FROZEN FRUIT!!!
- lots of fresh fruit!
