Vectiraptor greeni Longrich et al., 2021 (new genus and species)
(Back vertebra of Vectiraptor greeni, from Longrich et al., 2021)
Meaning of name: Vectiraptor = Isle of Wight thief; greeni = for Mick Green [discoverer and preparator of the original fossil]
Age: Early Cretaceous (Barremian)
Where found: Wessex Formation, Isle of Wight, U.K.
How much is known: Several partial vertebrae, probably from one individual. Some isolated teeth from the same formation may also belong to this species.
Notes: Vectiraptor was a dromaeosaurid theropod. It was fairly large for a dromaeosaurid (probably in the range of 2.5–3 m in total length), making it substantially larger than the only other dromaeosaurid previously named from the Wessex Formation, Ornithodesmus. Vectiraptor also differs from Ornithodesmus in lacking noticeable depressions on the sides of its hip vertebrae.
Reference: Longrich, N.R., D.M. Martill, and M.L. Jacobs. 2021. A new dromaeosaurid dinosaur from the Wessex Formation (Lower Cretaceous, Barremian) of the Isle of Wight, and implications for European palaeobiogeography.
