Sides: “Haha, I hope I don’t make him uncomfortable, but let’s see if I can hit embarrassment. 

“Wow. Where to start. Well. He’s sweet. And thoughtful. Kind of a hopeless romantic. Y’all have probably keyed in on that by now. He loves to dote, and spoil, and always tries to do things responsibly. The right way. Which is kinda funny because I’m me. I feel that’s explanatory.

“He’s patient. Which balances me out. He helps reign in some of my worst impulses. He’s steadying. A comforting presence. He knows just what to say to make me feel better when I’m low.

“I like talking with him. He shows a genuine interest in what I have to say. Whether it’s stupid slag and jokes, or more meaningful conversations. I’m not written off like some idiot kid. And I love to hear what he has to say back. It’s been like, what, a little over six years of daily conversations and I still can’t wait to eat up all his time.

“He has a wry sense of humor that’s fantastic and I’ve kinda noticed it coming out more and more lately.

“I love all of his little quirks and hobbies! Like the way his wings twitch when he feels some kinda way, or how he’ll hum to himself under his breath, or start muttering in Vosnian.

“I love that he puts a lot of love and care in the few things he still holds dear, and he’s so ready to protect it with a ferocity.

“Even if it’s detrimental to him, because he’s garbage at putting himself first. Frustrating as that is. We’re working on it.

“Although I like to think he kind of did in a way by being with me.

He tried to handle things responsibly - or at least as close to responsible as a person could get after they purposely abandon their phone. But still, he tried.

He went outside.

He ate something.

He saw some movies. He even saw his friends at the theaters, which triggered a brief conversation about them trying to invite him to come with but never getting a response because his phone was sitting on his on desk, untouched and unloved. Dennis tried to brush off their concerns when they asked why he chose  to leave it but they wouldn’t let it go, and in that moment Dennis felt kind of blessed to have Jack, Miko, and Raf for friends. Who else would show concern for him over something so small as leaving a cellphone behind?

But then Vince happened. And words were said.

Hurtful words.

Painful words.

Then Dennis saw red; First out of sheer rage, then as splatters of blood on his hands, his shirt, the concrete-- everything. It didn’t take him long to piece together that all the blood he saw, the wetness he felt on his lips, and the throbbing sensation around the center of his face were all connected. Vince now sported a nice split lip from the sucker punch he threw but that was the only injury he had.

So Dennis fled in shame, running all the way home with tears in his eyes.

He ignored his friends when they came by the house.

He swiped all their text messages away, both the old and the new.

He let the phone ring and ring until the voicemail was triggered, then promptly deleted the messages they left for him.

He hated everything, just as much as it hated him.

Then Sandcrest’s message came through and Dennis almost immediately swiped it away out of habit, but the new name and number gave him enough pause to read it before it could be disappear or wind up deleted. He frowned, sinking lower into the bed sheets while his emotions went haywire for the umpteenth time.

That god damned chat.
