I went to a totally beautiful and undisturbed birth today. Five of them, actually! The mother had the most natural births as we looked on, not disturbing her but just being “with woman.” With woman—with kitty.
Jan Tritten, in Midwifery Today Jan reminds us that being a cat is just another variation on normal. Also, that we can ignore risk factors such as being a "young and very small Bombay cat". But the super important midwifery lesson here is that if a woman eats a placenta "and then slurped the cords like strings of spaghetti", she will not hemorrhage after birth. Jan knows this is true because she has "never heard of a cat, goat or dog hemorrhaging to death". OMFG.
"There are no licensed midwives who can legally assist you with a twin homebirth. That does not mean there are no licensed midwives who will not help you, though...No licensed midwife in Florida will tell you over the phone that she catches twins."
My course is really really really hard. It is comprehensive because I want midwives to KNOW more, so they are comfortable doing less. I saw a lot of midwives meddling with birth because many of them did not know enough to recognize variations of normal.

Nuchal cord – or “cord around the neck” – is not pathological; that is to say, it’s not an abnormality

Cord Around Baby’s Neck Is NOT Automatic Emergency
Birth Without Fear, blogger
For thousands of years, mothers have given birth unassisted by medical technology. There was never a problem with blood incompatability.Â

When you feel that the baby is presenting itself and that no further progress can be made unless the placenta is removed from the opening, tear a hole, allow the fluid to empty out, and help guide the membranes around the baby's head, bearing down gently as the contractions direct you.
