Out of every one of your characters, which one is your favorite? And why are they your favorite? Do you try and make them a template for the level of detail and development you want them to have or do you try and make every other character completely different?
ough that’s kinda hard,,
I think Avery’s got to be my favorite character because he’s the most fun to draw and write for me (it’s gone to the point where whenever I need to draw a ‘default’ character they’ll look a lot like Avery wbwbwb)
imo he’s really simple but really complex at the same time, and he can be hilarious when the situation calls for it haha
As for your other question, I typically block out the amount of complexity I want of a character from the get-go
Avery’s a protagonist, so we spend a lot of time with him. Naturally, therefore, he should be interesting to be around
Sometimes, I have characters who exist to serve the narrative. Then, it’s a lot like ‘tricking the camera,’ where I’ll allude their complexities specifically where they’re needed without necessarily fleshing the whole character out, ‘cause we won’t see their entire personhood 🤷♀️
Characters are fun, but especially for the sake of a narrative, they’re not people— they’re vehicles representing something, whether that is a person or some other establishment— for example, a character could exist to solely embody the relationship between humans and technology. There are cases where a reader doesn’t need to know whether a character prefers Texas Toast, French Toast, or waffles if it isn’t relevant to the narrative.
