Dominic Salvatore "Don" Gentile flew Spitfires, P-47s and P-51s during World War II over the skies of Europe.  At 23 years of age, he would go on to surpass Eddie Rickenbacker's World War I record of 26 downed aircraft and was officially credited with 21.83 air and 6 ground victories during WWII.  After the war, on January 23, 1951, Gentile died in a training crash while piloting a T-33 jet trainer at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. The Fighter Collection at Duxford, UK also have a Bearcat that looks amazing wearing the same squadron colors. 🤙😎 An interesting fact about the F8F Bearcat is that the aircraft were originally fitted with "Safety Wing Tips" where outer 40 inches of which were designed to break off cleanly in case of the wing being over stressed in a dive or other maneuver (at 7.5G). After several incidents where one or both wing tips unintentionally tore off, this feature was replaced with an explosives system to blow the wingtips off together, which also worked well, but this ended when a ground technician died due to an accidental triggering 😬. In the end, the wings were reinforced and the aircraft limited to 7.5 g. .
