Portrait of a young lady holding a rosary, circa 1513-1519. The painting on wood is attributed to Joos van Cleve (c. 1485-1540/41) or his workship. The young woman’s fur-lined dress suggests she might have been a member of a wealthy family of merchants from the Southern Netherlands, perhaps Antwerp. Van Cleve was active as painter in this city between 1511 and 1540. He was a known member of the Guild of Saint Luke of Antwerp, the guild for painters.
