Portrait of a young lady holding a rosary, circa 1513-1519. The painting on wood is attributed to Joos van Cleve (c. 1485-1540/41) or his workship. The young woman’s fur-lined dress suggests she might have been a member of a wealthy family of merchants from the Southern Netherlands, perhaps Antwerp. Van Cleve was active as painter in this city between 1511 and 1540. He was a known member of the Guild of Saint Luke of Antwerp, the guild for painters. This Italian velvet (photo 1) from the 2nd half of the 15th century (collection Museum Mayer van den Bergh) shows a large pomegranate pattern, which was all the rage amongst the aristocracy from the early 15th century well into the 1st half of the 16th century. Rich fabrics such as velvet, silk and brocade with this pattern were used to make wall coverings, clothing and liturgical vestments.
